Thomson B763 Damaged on Landing at BRS.

A Thomson Airways Boeing 767-300, registration G-OOBK performing flight BY-519 from Cancun (Mexico) to Bristol,EN (UK), was on approach to Bristol’s runway 09 (2011 meters/6600 feet length) around 06:30L (05:30Z) when the aircraft touched down hard on the runway. The airplane rolled out and taxied to the gate.

After the airplane reached the gate, creases were observed at the crown of the aircraft.

The AAIB is investigating.

Gossip within the airline indicates the aircraft experienced an acceleration of 2.4G upon touch down.

The airframe was already involved in a hard landing accident producing structural damage to the crown of the aircraft at Ho Chi Minh City on Sep 19th 2000. At that time the airplane was in service for Vietnam Airlines with registration S7-RGV.

I am pretty sure there was no visible internal damage on landing, it was only on external inspection that anything was noticed about the crease.

Certainly would be. Alas, it seems no one on the forum is that close to this repair

And anybody that close, who posted pictures would proberbly get into a whole load of trouble:o
Somebody posted pictures of the damage to the 787 on the Planetalking blog and Boeing had them removed wery quickly. I should imagine the Boeing person that let them out would have had his plums squeezed by now!

Thanks for that.
It would be interesting to see the extent of the damage to the structure inside(Stringers, seat rails etc, etc).

I am amazed that no close up pictures of the damage have emerged.

Anyone able to confirm that the repair is now complete and that a test flight should take place sometime this week?

Just out of curiosity, the damage caused I am sure Will stem into quite a few pounds cost wise. Given the age of the aircraft the length of time out of service what decides the go ahead to repair against leasing a new 767 into the fleet, maybe a newer build?.

When you look at the age of the the AC it has about another 12-15 years life in it and the cost of replacement out weighs the loss in Rev/repair, I have heard the repair is around £10m and the insurance company will pick up the tab for that and sometimes loss of Rev.

Thomson/ first choice have a spare 763 so having BK out is not to bad until another 763 go’s TECH!

I have a feeling Boeing may be stumping up a lot of the cost a la 787 delays

They say it could be 3-4 month to repair.

Not sure how far they are in to the repair but i do know the crown needs to be pealed off and replaced.

Well, I was up there most of Thursday evening in the Aeroclub Club room. Looking right at it sat in its temp hangar. Boy was it blowing bloody hard. The hangar was bending and swaying about and most of us were comenting on the movment of the structure.

When they starting work?

I’m not sure why it say’s EGGT but i looked on a couple of other Notam sites and they all start with EGGT!

Just an update the 763 went in to it’s temporary hangar on Sunday night but had to be moved back out due to high winds and the hangar being hit hard by them.
