Let stewardesses land the plane in a crisis, says Ryanair boss: Airline wants to ditch co-pilots
Ryanair’s ever-controversial boss has called for the second pilot to be dumped from the flight deck of aircraft to save money.
Michael O’Leary suggested air stewardesses could be trained to take over and land the plane in the event of a crisis.
The idea is the latest in a long line of cash-saving wheezes from the budget airline boss who once suggested, apparently seriously, that aircraft could fly with standing-only areas for passengers.

Flight plans: Ryanair cabin crew could be trained as pilots so that they could take over and land the plane in the event of a crisis

I think maybe he was in a bar with a gut full of Guinness when he made this outlandish statement

Fr has been lucky so far and that’s fortunate.
I just hope that their first accident will not enlight heavy deficiencies in their safety rules and maintenance.

The public want to fly on the cheap. They don’t care about who’s driving, how many are driving, how little they are paid or how badly the drivers are treated.
True they want cheap stuff, whether it be a seat at FL270 or a gizmo made in a China sweatshop to save a quid….
But, you’d think some would remember this is their safety they’re talking about.
That’s the message that the Hudson River landing should have taught passengers…namely, when things go bad, you need good people in the front seats.

Thank goodness MOL hasn’t yet got to think UAVs
Thank goodness MOL hasn’t yet got beyond the study of race horse manure and hopefully will never reach the concepts of UAVs. Heaven forbid if he does and the stupid journalists that would publicise the ensuing nonsense.
In fact I think he’s missed a stage before ‘leap frogging’ to this ‘mad one’ of stewardesses landing planes.
The hypothetical intermediate idea could have been something stupid on these lines –
“First Officer after take off will act as cabin crew, and ofcourse resume their first officer seat for landing.
Need for one less cabin crew.
Only paid as First Officer grade for the few minutes duration of actual take off and landing, all the rest at cabin crew rate.”
All of this crazy publicity is quite insulting to professional pilots and to airline bosses that haven’t taken leave of their senses

There’s always the Autopilot…

Also, as Deno says, there are people who will pay for the chance to be a pilot. So why cut the co pilot when there are people who will do it for free?
It’s just a publicity stunt.Rgds Cking
Ckings pretty much right, and so is Deano. We’re pretty much forced into forking out alot of money to train as a pilot now and with no sponsorship now the airlines just dictate the show unfortunately.
A friend of mine recently joined FR as a first officer. I feel sorry for him. It must feel quite bad to have your boss believe that an air hostess can do your job (whether its a publicity stunt or not)

Aw let him play;) I suspect we may very well see an end to his maniacal smile and tired jibes at others when the full impact of the expected hike in the price of crude oil over the next 2 years, collides with his business model. A model which rests on foundations of endless cheap fuel to function. But then his “low cost airline” is not alone in that.

Does he pay insurance? Even if he used qualified pilots looking for hours and willing to fly without pay, the insurance companies will bump up the premium, because they will invariably be low time guys.

BTW: I’d think that the public would prefer not to fly on an airline run by anyone who comes up with these ideas. Flying is a bit more serious than the private life of an overage pop star.

Okay, let’s assume he’s not an idiot or drunk.
If he’s doing it in the name of “any publicity is good publicity” he’s a fool.
Look how good that ploy worked for Michael Jackson.
Sooner or later living with a chimp, and reportedly sleeping in an oxygen chamber and trying to buy the bones of the “Elephant man” (or in this case, SRO, no potties and let the girl land it when the captain pops his clog) backfire and instead of laughing with you, the public is laughing AT you.

What are they trying to divert attention from this time, I wonder?

He’s been watching the Airplane series while drinking moonshine
MOL is at the publicity game again after watching the Airplane series of spoofs, he’s obviously been at the moonshine and as for smoking ‘whatever’; I think he’s inhaling it via an orifice normally reserved for the toilets that soon will be non existent on RyanAir.
When are they going to put him out to graze like his retired race horses?

He seems to be smoking some top quality stuff!

Sort of degrades pilots IMHO.
If I was a pilot, I would take it as a bloody insult!
By: Deano - 4th September 2010 at 11:16
This will never happen because a) the First Officer is a source of revenue for Ryanair, each having to spend at least EU40,000 just to sit in that seat, and b) is MOL telling Joe Public that stewardesses have access to a locked flightdeck? What a pikey clown that chap is
