Just seen a Thomas cook 757 flying around 16,000ft above Bolton, made 3 passes and his gear is cycling up and down, looked on air traffic live and he is circling. Wonder whats up?

More technical problems with the TC 75’s and also the 76 was tech yesterday, the mint airways B757 might as well be on permanent lease to TCX:D

It might have had something to do with the thunderstorms in the vicinity of MAN at around that time.
Maybe a short test flight that was involuntarily extended. 🙂

Strange, it doesn’t really fit in with the gear emergency checklist, maybe they were just flight testing the gear. Too bad you didn’t have an air band radio to listen in. BTW you could modify an ordinary radio for next to no cost. I’ve done it already.

Around 3 times on the first pass, then retracted and then down for the 4 or five times I saw him, according to live radar he was circling over Bolton then up towards Leyland, Blackburn and back over Bolton. Heights ranging from 10,000 to 16,000 ft.
After around 30mins he then went in to Manchester, kept me occupied for a while anyway.

How many times did he cycle the gear?

The clue is in the callsign “P” usually means positioning but could also indicate its on airtest. Cycling gear is normal for this sorta thing. Its unusual if there is a gear issue to cycle it. You get it down you leave it down.

A Thomas Cook 757 flying around 16,000 feet above Bolton perhaps? I’ve always thought Bolton looked better from 16,000 feet away in any direction.
Seriously though, it does sound odd. Sincerely hope that whatever problem there may be is resolved satisfactorily.
