New 717 operator – Blue1

Finnish operator Blue1 is to replace its MD90 and 146 fleets with nine 717s, the first four being the former Quantum Air/AeBal 717s that have been stored in Spain and recently re-reg’d to SAS and ferried to Miami for overhaul. Each 717 will have a different themed colour scheme:

Hello!

Blue1’s sixth Boeing 717 is believed to be on its way to Helsinki from Miami via Bangor and Keflavik.

Hello,

their latest Boeing 717 wears the “Star Alliance”-livery. The last MD-90 was replaced at the end of November 2010.

Hopefully, we’ll both be around to settle up.

And for the record, I meant individual airframes in service that long, not the type. Delta just retired some 1967 build DC-9’s it inherited from Northwest.

Having said that, I’ll bet the E-190’s don’t make it 43 year in service like the DC-9s did.

I’d take that bet 😉

It does seem unfortunate that more of these airplanes did not sell. By all accounts, it seems to be a very nice little airplane.

I think it got caught between the slightly larger A320/737 airplanes and slightly smaller but all new, light, higher tech large RJ’s like the E-190, which has an empty weight 5-6,000 lbs less than the 717. The 717 is an odd size, and based upon the older DC-9 structure which was heavier than the newer airplanes. Having said that, I’ll bet the E-190’s don’t make it 43 year in service like the DC-9s did.

The only information that I know:

Helsinki – London Heathrow KF555/556, effective 26SEP10

However I am not 100% sure about these dates because of the delayed introduction of the 717.

Anyone know when they are likely to start using the 717 on the LHR-HEL route at all?

It seems that the 717 is still an attractive product for many airlines (now) and the used ones are searched on the used market.

I think that (sadly) there are not that many airlines that are interested in the 717. Boeing was not able to do business with the DC-9/-MD-80/-90-costumer-base inherited with McDonnell Douglas and the base was huge at one time (some don´t believe that). You can count all the airlines who selected the 737 as replacements for MD-80s etc. after the merger and the number is not that high while Airbus was able to secure more MD-costumers for business with their A320-family.

The interest of Blue1 is rather a nice and interesting exception compared to other companies who selected alternative aircraft currently in production. The entire costumer-census of the 717 is rather small and you can count them very easily. Even airlines with very good 717-operating-experience folded their operation or replaced their 717s during the last years and it will be interesting to see what happens to the 25 Boeing 717s originally booked for MexicanaClick.

Bye!

Well it makes me wonder if boeing didn’t stop the 717’s production line too fast.

I don´t know. The anticipated future fleet-size of the 717 at Blue1 was known before MexicanaClick folded.

Would Blue1 be eying the Mexicana 717s?

The last MD-90 will be phased out during January 2011. The entire MD-90-fleet will find a new home in the USA and in the fleet of Delta Air Lines. Blue1 plans to operate 14 Boeing 717s but some sources say that the 717-fleet could be topped to up to 24 aircraft within the next years but I am not so sure about these intentions unless there are more reliable sources.

Second Boeing 717 for Blue1

Blue1 took delivery of their second Boeing 717-200. This aircraft will bear the registration OH-BLJ and is temporarly registered SE-REL.

Can somebody inform us about their planned inauguration? Most sources say that the aircraft is in operation but I was not able to find a reliable source and the website is not updated with new fleet-info etc..
