As a footnote to this thread, I took a final photograph today.. I hope you appreciate it – I was up to my shins in snow….
The foundations for the former terminal (notable in the photo by its absence…) were completely removed by JCB, so there’s not even anything left for Tony Robinson to dig up in a huindred years…

PlaneMike, the original Pre-war Birmingham terminal is still alive and well

jim jobe…………
Thanks for your info. I had been thinking earlier but guess that sort of selection could still be around in 1956…. One a/c I not could identify was Marathon, you put me out my misery.

Things were a lot different in 1956. I was able to just walk around the parked aircraft and no-one thought anything of it. Just imagine that today!
One other aircraft that was in for the show a couple of days earlier was a USAF Beaver but I only saw that fly over.

I was at the airshow BBQ a few years back when it was fogged off at Seaburn but glorious sunshine up at the airport. That was held in that building and it was majestic! Sorry to see it come to a sudden demise! 🙁
Funnily enough I was doing my weeks work experience at the Fire Station :diablo: when a bloke from T&W Museums came to take some photos of the Belman, before it met its end. So my memory of the hanger is sitting in Rescue 7 outside on a very foggy day, while this photographer seemed to take a lifetime to photograph every nook and cranny of it.
Me and the fire-fighter spent the time contemplating what i’d have to do if the Airfield Crash Alarm went off while we were sitting there, he’d have to respond of course and had his gear in the back with the radios tuned in
Loved every minute of the week 😀 especially the Monday when they got a shout for a Tornado struck by lightning – not that I wanted an accident mind!
Anyway back to the present :p

Thanks JT442. If you ever get to head a little further south, check out the Aviator at Sywell, which still maintains a similar decor.

Fond memories of Newcastle when I used it with some frequency during the 80s. The buildings were looking a bit tired then, but still sad to see another piece of history disappear.:(

Sad to hear of the demise of an art deco building, but probably inevitable if it had deteriorated beyond the point of no return.
Has anyone any photographs of it either recently or in its heyday?

The only building of that vintage is the garage between the flying club and the old terminal. The flying club hangar is next oldest, followed by the smaller of the two NAA hangars (Internal structure dates to the mid 1930’s).
The Belman was pulled down a few years back, as was the Gill Hangar.
The only thing of note on the Southside now is that there is an unusual kink in the road as you head towards NAA’s 737… its the only reminder of RAF Woolsington – the camp cut across where the road is now, and the modern building on the left (The ground services guys) sits on the RAF boundary..

At least they waited until after the airport’s 75th anniversary celebrations.
Are there many of the older buildings left now? The ‘new’ terminal got swallowed up by the current monstrosity years ago.

I believe a veiwng area will be set up on production of a spotters card after beong vetted. Nice one!
OK so shout me down if you want , but I dont want to be vetted just so that I can spot planes.
I have more than enough ID to produce and have to be vetted for my job , so why should I have to be for my hobby.
What about the familys that want to go to the airport for a couple of hours in the sun on a weekend.
Can you imagine what would happen at the AVP at Manchester if everybody had to be vetted before they could get in.
Sorry I think this is a silly idea.

Great idea..Airports of the world take a lesson

One funny thing about Newcastle was if you stopped until th light started fading in the car parks near the Nature reserve, you had to beware of the night time carpark enthusiasts arriving, if you know what i mean:eek:

I would advise NOT hyolding breath for any good for the spotter to come out of this…
Unfortunately these “schemes” are always one way traffic.. the police realising that a spotters eyes are a handy tool to help them, and offering false promises of pushing for better spotters facilities. Same mince happened at GLA about 4 years waiting on the promised mound of dirt near the GAT.. in fact the only occurence at GLA has been the long established mound at 05 hold being fenced off.
Sorry to be a sour puss, just remember getting all excited myself after spotters meeting with the airport operators:mad:
