Qantas have been flying over the Grand Prix for many years.. albeit with 744’s before the A380 came along..they definitely don’t carry any pax except for a handful of photographers

I think both Virgin and Northwest 747-400’s have done it (with pax) at Biggin and North Weald Fighter Meet in years gone by (both during an inbound to LGW). Probably some rule about it now though?

I saw it done at an air show many moons ago (Finningley or Church Fenton?) with a Northeast Trident en-route from Heathrow to Newcastle.
Yes …I saw it done at RAF Halton !
At an open day (1989 ish ?)
A DC10 (i think) inbound from the states, the capt was an ex Halton Apprentice and on his last flight with (Cal Air ?) before retirement.
I was astounded !! I had watched him holding at low level (less than 1000′) a few miles away for quite some time before he was cleared in for his flyby…a lovely gesture by somebody to let him do it… but ….words fail me on the common sense aspect !!
Anybody confirm the details ??
seems a long time ago !

On another Trident en-route to Glasgow from Heathrow in the mid 1980’s, I remember the BA captain advising us that we were directly overhead a cricket test match at Old Trafford, Manchester, but I dont think he made any ‘special’ manoeuvres to allow the cricketing crowd to get a better view of us! Shame really!
Regards …..Paul

really? Is that normal practice for such events? :confused:Never heard of a plane full of passengers performing a fly by.

I should stress, I did not believe what the commentators had said.

When I was on a training flight in a 747-400, we had to do a full stop landing, and all those onboard, apart from the two Captains, had to get off and get a bus back home as the aircraft was going to do a fly-past display around Beachy Head, and we were not allowed onboard during this, so I would be astonished if it is any different in any other country.

According to the BBC F1 commentators on the day, the A380 was supposedly operating a normal scheduled flight, was full of passengers and continued on its way to LAX after the flyover.
What a load of ********..it took off from Tulla.. did it’s Grand Prix fly over.. returned to the airport and was serviced loaded with pax and returned to scheduled service
