RAF Mona

i was wondering if anyone might be able to help in this request for detailed info on this airfield. i have recently started to learn how to build airfields for microsoft fsx, due to the default one’s being somewhat lacking in detail and correct layouts. with this in mind i have decided to undertake the redrawing of raf mona on the isle of angelsey, north wales.
i have had some help for fellow simmer’s with programming, also some other forum sites for possible details. the thing is i can’t find any real details of what mona looked like in the 1960’s/70’s. building wise. all i have is the goggle earth image showing the unused grass covered taxiways and hard standings. i hope that someone might help me in this matter. many thanks

I was a Valley in early/mid eighties and flew from mona a few times in light aircraft, and we went there working on Hawks a few times when there were problems at Valley.
I seem to recall going in the main gate, and there being one large scruffy hangar, an air traffic tower (?), and a couple of other smaller buildings.
We had a couple of Hawk have ‘incidents’ there one crashing after hitting birds (xx180), and another doing a wheels up landing after the pilot cocked up….he then ejected after the aircraft came to rest!.
I also recall several near misses when lorries went through the traffic lights on the A5, and approaching aircraft having to pull up to avoid them.

Willis & Hollis (Military Airfields UK 39-45) state that the accommodation was (in Dec 44) “Temporary” (Nissen, Seco, etc). They do, however, list the hangars as 1 x T1 and 17 x EO Blister! At what point in time they were removed I do not know.

I was at school in Anglesey during 1968-70 and a friend and I cycled up to Mona one day. I don’t recall seeing any buildings there at all which is not to say there weren’t. However I seem to remember it as being flat, bleak and windswept.

Have you tried here, http://airfieldinformationexchange.freeforums.org/index.php alot of good airfield info and pictures. Might be worth approaching RAF Valley, see if they have anything in their archives.

Hi,

Might be better posting this question in the Historic Aviation forum.

Best wishes
