Qantas engine failure terrifies passengers
Qantas engine ‘in flames’
The media has gone into another “feeding frenzy” following the failure of one engine (number 4 engine) of a QANTAS Boeing 747 that departed Singapore Changi Airport for Melbourne late last week.
QF10, operated by VH-OJQ appeared to have suffered a surge in its Rolls Royce RB211 number 4 engine whilst flying at FL310.
The crew subsequently elected to return to Singapore.

I wouldn’t have fancied seeing that out of the window at 31,000 feet.
A colleague of mine who is a very nervous flier is travelling Qantas in the summer. Telling her about the fuselage hole incident of some time ago, she asked me to let her know if anything else happens to a Qantas jet.
She’ll not be pleased to hear about this, so maybe I’d better not tell her.

True, and eyewitnesses can embellish their accounts…:)

In their defence, a surge can be somewhat spectacular. Flames issuing from an engine has been known to worry even the most nonchalant amongst us.
I do speak from experience.

The media will seize any trivial or routine(to aircrew) thing to do with aviation and sensationalize it to sell their newspapers 😡
