Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger has been a high-profile figure since he successfully “splash-landed” a US Airways jet in the Hudson River after a birdstrike disabled both of the aircraft’s engines. The Arizona Republic writes that since then, Sullenberger “has attended Barack Obama’s inauguration and the Super Bowl, lined up countless speaking engagements, testified in a pilots union dispute and written a book. Everything, it seems, but return to the job that made him famous.”
But it sounds like Sullenberger will soon be back in the cockpit. The Republic reports Sullenberger was spotted by the celebrity gossip outfit TMZ, which got the pilot to say he’d “be back at work soon.” The Republic contacted US Airways, which confirmed that Sullenberger is to return, though a firm date hasn’t been set. The airline says he’s begun flight training this month, “a standard step after an absence,” according to the Republic.
Dawn Gilbertson, the Republic’s aviation reporter, also reports that Sullenberger’s book is set for an Oct. 13 release. The book’s title will be “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters.”
