SkyEurope Suspends Ops

Well, hardly a surprise….

Struggling SkyEurope Airlines suspends all operations
David Kaminski-Morrow, London (01Sep09, 09:08 GMT, 160 words)

Central European budget carrier SkyEurope Airlines has suspended operations with immediate effect.

The airline, already under Slovak creditor protection, has been struggling to stay afloat in the face of heavy losses, defaults on payments and, lately, being barred from two major bases.

SkyEurope says it has “suspended” its operations and sales and “regrets the inconvenience” caused to passengers.

There had been indications yesterday of serious problems with the airline’s operations after Bratislava Airport, its home base, showed all SkyEurope flights had been cancelled from midnight.

Prague Airport’s operator had also threatened to end all SkyEurope handling today. The airline was similarly barred from Vienna over unpaid debts in mid-August.

SkyEurope has a fleet of two Boeing 737-700s which it owns, plus two -700s leased from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise. It also leases a handful of older 737 models.

About 60% of SkyEurope is floated on the stock exchange while two investment firms, York Global Finance and Focus Capital, hold the balance.

And the airline with no class at all has a a/c painted with a slogan saying “bye bye sky europe”. .Lets hope MAN but a flag out saying “thank god your going, you will not be missed”;)

Anyway sad to see another one go. Lets hope FR dont announce an ex-sky europe base in the next few weeks (which they probably will). EZY will be welcome by most people on the more western routes (AMS-VIE, VIE-LCA, ORY-PRG, ORY-VIE and MAD-VIE).

Well, too late, FR already announced a base at Bratislava a couple of weeks ago, so right on home turf for SkyEurope. That said, Wizz are the airline that have been going after them for some time across central Europe and Wizz’s decision to start a Prague base will have had a dramatic effect on cash-flow at SkyEurope just as a result of forward bookings bewing made with W6 instead. So consequently Wizzair have probably had more to do with SkyEurope’s demise if you’d like to blame anyone.

As for the slogan, come one and get over it. Ryanair do that about lots and lots of airlines, many of whom will not be going out of business anytime soon. And they’re not alone, other European LCC’s have been paiting similar slogans recently. Finally don’t forget the battleground that was Virgin’s fuselages with comments fired out in the direction of BA. These things are to be taken with jest.

As for MAN hanging out a flag, the only thing that needs hanging out there is the management, have they failed ot notice the only show in town these days are LCC’s! Despite rumours about EZY embarking on grand expansion at the Airport, I’m not sure they can be all that true given that LTN has been considered a touch pricey with a similar yield strength to MAN.

It’s still a pitty. I liked them! First time I flew with them was from Barcelona to Vienna, when Lufthansa cancelled my outbound ticket because they said I didn’t take my inbound flight (flew inbound via London). Pissed me off monumentally! And was the last time ever I booked with Lufthansa. In any case Skyeurope had a seat for a reasonable price and even had the plane wait for me for ten minutes. And then there was a ‘kissing contest’ in the air, where on all Skyeurope flights they told people to kiss at the same time. Was nice in a way. And they had some really cute stewardesses also. 🙂

🙁 I’m gonna miss the interesting variety of eastern european aircraft they brought into Luton over the past year. Was always a nice sight (never did get that Dubrovnik MD-80 though), but as said already, they should have dissapeared months ago. The other airlines were not given so much mercy.

I think it is fair to say that the demise of SkyEurope is not too much of a surprise. Their mounting debts and shrinking fleet must have made day-to-day operations near-impossible. I flew with SkyEurope in October last year from Luton to Prague and the experience was a surprisingly pleasant one. The total cost of the flight (return) was a mere £25, seating was assigned, flights were both on time, the 737-700 aircraft were both were clean and comfortable and the cabin staff were friendly and professional. Their service put not only other low cost airlines to shame but also some full fare airlines. It is a real shame to see the airline go.

Agreed, surprised they lasted this long, but still sad.

Vienna Airport had stopped providing ground handling, and Prague was also going to withdraw all such servcies as of today too due to unpaid debts.

To be honest, I cannot believe they held on for so long.

That was the information I had, too.

I’m equally amazed that they lasted as long as they did.

More jobs losted.

It was inevitable since they started returning their new 737NG’s.

They didn’t start returning them, they were having them forceably taken back.

Vienna Airport had stopped providing ground handling, and Prague was also going to withdraw all such servcies as of today too due to unpaid debts.

To be honest, I cannot believe they held on for so long.

Someone linked me to their website last night that has a very blunt and to the point announcement that they’re suspending operations. ‘Surprising’ or not, it’s very sad to see another one go. 😡
