Airband Scanner-help needed please!!

Hiya,
My Yupiteru scanner is really poorly and KEEPS losing all its frequencies, so I think it is time for a new scanner!!
What I need is one with a good range-I live by Gatwick and like listening to LHR Twr/App which the yupiteru picks up fine and Swanwick freqs in the South East Sectors as well ( LGW 2 MILES AWAY a strong scanner is not needed!)
I have a Maycom 108 but this is just for use by the runways etc-not strong enough for what i need.
Anyone recommend a scanner that has a good range,am prepared to pay up to £250.00 ish(had birthday money luckily!)
Have had a Signal Corpn Radio before that was very elderly-i sold it on e bay-wish i had kept it LOL!!That had a brilliant range and could pick up a/c talking to Shannon when we lived in Brighton(did have a roof aerial tho and were much higher up there!)
Someone mentioned the Uniden Bearcat 3500-anyone got one of those and recommend it?
Thanks:)

I use an Alinco DJ-X7.

It’s my first one so still learning the ropes really.

I pick up a lot of BHX and MCR ATC traffic.

Cost about £120 I think and I love it to bits.

Have a Dipole aerial in the loft–we left the last one at our old house when we moved here-it isbrand new, all ready to use-other half has set it all up-wont put it on roof in case we move again!!

No problem!….Happy to help!. Another thing to consider is a good aerial (outside preferably!)….mine is in the loft because it’s too difficult to get up on the apex of the house as it’s quite tall, but i’ve used Westflex 103 coax cable and it really makes a difference to using standard RG58U cable….the better quality the cable, the better the signal should be!

Cheers Andy-will do!
I am looking around now(other half is going to get The Yupiteru mended and use it himself!) Maycom 108 was rubbish last night -i gave up listening- didnt even pick up the LGW GROUND PROPERLY(and we are 2-3 miles from LGW right next to the flightpath!!!!)
back to searching for scanners!

Hi, in my opinion, no !. I used to own an R532 and it was brilliant !. I keep looking for these on ebay as that’s about the only place you can get them these days. I can remember pulling in stations far away with one of these and when it broke (about 15 years ago), i got the Realistic PRO2004, which still pulled in a lot, but i don’t think it was as sensitive as the R532 (but that could be psychological !!).

I currently have the BCT15 (Uniden) and i would say it’s a really sensitive scanner and doesn’t suffer from interference from other stations (like some of my Realistics did!).

The BCT15 is quite a difficult thing to get hold of as i think it’s main market is in the USA/Canada. I got mine brand new off ebay. But i think some of the other BCT’s are very similar (UBC785XLT for example at around £250 on ebay, brand new): http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bearcat-UBC785XLT-desktop-scanner-very-latest-batch_W0QQitemZ400069111306QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ConsumerElectronics_SpecialistRadioEquipment_SM?hash=item5d25fa2e0a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

BUT……some of the Unidens are hard to figure out/program. I use software called “BC Tool” which is free, to program it and it works brill in this way. You get the PC cable with the scanner anyway.

The easiest ones to program (by far!) are the Realistic ones and i would say if you’re not looking for advanced features (station names, ID tags, Close Call etc etc) then go for a Realistic PRO2006, one of the more sensitive scanners i’ve owned. They are in abundance on ebay for around the £50 mark !

Let us know how you get on !

Andy

Thanks Andy!
The Signal Corp 532 I should never have got rid of! Do the Uniden scanners you mentioned have the signal strength as good as the Signal do you think!”

Hi, i have the Uniden UBC9000XLT and love it!. It’s quite sensitive and pulls in everything my Realistic Pro 2006 does (and that’s another sensitive radio which you can pick up (pardon the pun!) on ebay for around £40 – £60).

I also have a Uniden BCT15 which is really sensitive, but hard to find in the UK.

As for hand-held, the Realistic Pro26 was always a great scanner, as was my Signal R532 and R537 !. As you can see i’ve had a fair few scanners !

Might be worth having a quick look at: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/widerxvr/chartw.html

And: http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/25

At least you can get an idea of what various scanners do and then search for them in Google (or ebay…..i’ve bought many scanners from ebay without any issues)

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards,
Andy
