Delta bans overweight F/A's from wearing new uniform

Delta Airlines in the United States is in big trouble with The Association of Flight Attendants who say that the recent initiative to stop overweight female flight attendants wearing their bright red uniforms is offensive.

Delta Airlines will not provide the eye catching and sexy red uniforms to women who are over the size of 18 and instead these women are supposed to wear the somewhat duller dark blue uniform. The Association of Flight Attendants from the airline Northwest who own Delta said that this is a clear case of discrimination and obviously they are trying to distract attention from the larger air hostesses.

Ms. Patricia Reller who is the Vice Chairwoman of the NWA AFA grievance committee explained that she was extremely offended by the decision and that there were many “fuller figured women who would like to wear the red dress”.

Delta has refused to back down however and the problem has been put forward for union mediation. Delta said that they had a number of different uniforms that were both “stylish and very functional” and that they saw no reason to provide the red dresses in larger sizes.

If serious about the safety angle (vs trolly dolly reality): Regular fitness tests … no midgets … no whales … no grannies … and no size 26 sweet boys with too much aftershave either!

I think you’ve just grounded United, American and Delta

No point me applying for Delta then 😉 Note to self “Must stop using Brut and Old Spice”

Hmm… Yes, because of course being cabin crew is more of an athletic activity than anything else.

I heard from a little birdy that the DESIGNER (Richard Tyler) of the dress is the one who chose to supply it only up to size 18. Unable to verify.

At any rate, it seems just another example of why unions are not only less and less relevant but in many cases also a joke.

Or it could be an aesthetic decision. Dark colours tend to slim, bright colours to make you look bigger.?

Probably a safety decision…afraid that a large FA bending over would blind the pilots. “I can just see you bending over the stove, the trouble is I can’t see the stove”….Groucho Marx.

I wonder how big cabin crew have to be before they can’t do the job safely?

When they’re too big to fit through an emergency exit…
Or when their weight reduces the paying passenger load to 6-8.
Even then, the airline would probably be sued by the union.:D

Someone doesn’t know the difference between “ban” and “won’t supply”. It’s only a ban if they refuse to allow any flight attendant who makes (or has made) her own red uniform from wearing it. Not supplying larger sizes could be just an economy measure, assuming they already have stock of the older uniform in larger sizes, or a contract to have larger sizes made. Each size you add to the range puts the price up.
