BBC: "Ice falls from plane and hits man"

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/8139714.stm

A Bristol man has described how he was hit by a block of ice which fell from an aeroplane as he sat in his garden.

David Gammon lives under the flight path for Bristol International Airport.

He said: “We heard a plane going overhead and then a whistling sound and all of a sudden a piece of ice the size of a grapefruit fell on my thigh.”

Mr Gammon, 76, is bruised but recovering. Bristol International said there was no proof the ice had fallen from a plane using the airport.

The photo on the news story’s page shows the man holding a fairly substantial chunk of ice. If that is the chunk of ice that hit him (which isn’t explicitly stated) then I’m curious as to where it could have separated from?

Cloud 9, a mate of mine also used to park at a similar car park at Heathrow in the 80’s. One day 20 or so cars including his had their paintwork damaged by the leak of a caustic subtsance that came from an aircraft on approach. From what I recall his insurance paid out but the insurance company did try to get recompense from the BAA, but I don’t know how it ended.

These things do happen. I lost my windscreen on my last car due to an aircraft approaching Heathrow. They go directly over our works car park every couple of minutes.

I work at Heathrow too and park in a car park where the aircraft pass extremely close (literally seconds before touchdown!). Have often wondered how much carnage would be caused if an aircraft didnt quite make it to the runway.

…just claimed it on the insurance.

Would an insurance company pay-out if my car was wrecked if an accident such as above happened, and/or would the airline be responsible for compensation?

I suppose the chances of it actually happening are minimal, but it very nearly did happen when that BA 777 crashed last year.

Although I didn’t see it happen, a chap from work was standing about 10 yards from the car when he heard the crash. He wandered over and saw lumps of ice everywhere and a 3 inch scab in my windscreen  He couldn’t see the aircraft due to low cloud but he could hear it disappearing off into the distance. There wasn’t any other damage thankfully, so I didn’t make a fuss and just claimed it on the insurance.

Ouch!

For anyone that may have been thinking (like me for example!:o) that there is no evidence of the bruising he sustained…just watch the video in the link!

I will be honest and admit that I did think it was a bit of a hoax at first, but now I am not so sure…!
