New Graphics card needed.

I have a Creative 32mb Riva TNT2 Ultra Gamer, and I have just bought Flight Environment not realising that I would need a 128 mb graphics card. I have a AGP 8x slot but not a PCI-E slot so is there any suggestions that anyone has about the best card to buy without spending silly money, but will also last a few years if possible, as I have managed with my 32mb cards for about 5 years.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Stumpy, what processor has your computer got?

you want to be careful not to get a graphics card that is far to fast for your processor. the processor won’t be able to keep up with the graphics card, so the graphics cards full potential would be wasted.

dean, you can’t go wrong with the 6600gt. its a great card!

This is excellent advice. I get the impression Stumpy that you may fall into that trap if you are not careful. Limited upgrading is all right if you know ALL the issues involved.
I fell foul of that at one time – i had a damned good graphics card that was as useful as a chocolate teapot ‘cos the processor was way behind the times.I didn’t upgrade the processor because to do so meant changing the motherboard. In the end i had to bite the bullet
But that’s a fact of computer/flight sim life I’m afraid !

Unless you have a super duper case or PSU, it is as well sometimes to get a whole new computer.

I´m thinking about changing my 9600xt for a X800 or a X850 (AGP versions), they´re expensive but the damn FS need a very powerful hardware. Maybe it will be my present from the three wise men (we get the present´s on january 6 here in spain).

Stumpy Doofleer, try with a 9600XT, it´s the card I´m using now and it´s enough to run FS, you won´t be able to use the sim with 100% graphic quality however but it must be cheap nowadays.

I just bought a GeForce 6600gt for a hundred squid, it’s got rave reviews for a mid range card, I have all the sliders maxed out on the gfx settings and I constantly get the 20fps I set it at

I admire your stamina, I really do. 😉 But, as we are talking about flight sims, probably the most demanding branch of computer graphics, are you sure you aren’t pulling our leg? 🙂
