Authorities are investigating YouTube footage of an apparent near miss of a model plane and a Virgin Blue flight from Melbourne to Perth.

Police have spoken to witnesses who claim they saw the remote-control model flying directly toward the 160-seat 737 passenger jet as it came in to land at Perth Airport.

One is believed to have thought they craft collided.

The model enthusiast was reported by another hobbyist after the video was posted on YouTube.

A video camera was fitted to the model to make the YouTube clip and shows the jet speeding past just 30m away.

As the model turns to follow, it is sucked into the jet’s wash and plummets out-of-control to the ground.

Another camera shows the wrecked model plane soon after.

Aviation experts say the model could have triggered a major emergency if it had been sucked into the airliner’s jets or cracked a windscreen.

He faces up to two years jail for the stunt. It is an offence to fly within 5km of an airport.

The video shows the 850g model with a 1m wingspan take off and fly over Perth suburbs to dialogue taken from “Maverick” and “Goose” from the Tom Cruise film Top Gun, before being sucked into the plane’s jet wash and spinning out of control.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority told The West Australian they were investigating the after video footage from a camera attached the model aircraft handed to authorities.

The report said the offender took the footage down, but it was copied by others who handed it to the authorities.

It is understood the incident occurred about on Friday morning about 800m from the runway.

The Virgin Blue plane was undamaged, but the company is expected to pursue legal action.
