Some of you may be interested to learn that the entry charges in the Manchester Viewing Park have gone up.
It’s now £2 for pedestrians and car passengers – yes, folks, that’s a 100% increase.
Cars are now £5 including driver.
It cost £9 for three of us in a car to get in there this morning.
If I told you what I really think of this, then I’d have to moderate myself! 😮

Just like this one.:D

Dan is quite right, that’s where the Viewing Park used to be.
It’s the site of an old brickworks, the chimney of which was a familiar sight in the background of pictures taken at Ringway.

The AVP isn’t actually where that map says it is, is it?
Andrew
The AVP on the map above is on the wrong place… thats Google maps for you… 😮

I don’t know MAN very well so could be wrong, but I think the AVP used to be southside, a long time ago. The map doesn’t include the new runway either, so it’s probably just an outdated map.

Map Below…
ENSURE… when you go… respect the local residents, dont park if a draft place,(or in the drive at the end of the lane) (parking on the grass is the only option on Wood Lane but beware of the rocks the locals put down and dont make a mess of the grass..
Go to the end of the road where theres is a metal gate (public footpath, climb over the next gate and then your there..
Your free to walk up and down, its a public foot path..
Ps.. you will see a handful of spotters there… I tend to go there early morning as the run way switches over at around 12pm on a weekend.. and about 11am on a weekday… (Monday)
Red marks the spot… Yellow is the route to get there…

I wonder what would have happened had the price been increased by 5p or 10p. I am willing to bet that many would be up in arms over having such an awkward price requiring the AVP (and it’s visitors) to stockpile on small change money. Considering the low price the AVP was charging they where between a rock and a hard place.
Now don’t get me wrong, a 100% increase is a lot. But get some perspective already! It´s a single pound! It´s a bit under a the price of a litre of diesel; a bit over the weekday’s Times edition, but “considerably” lower then the saturday Times edition; it’s two/thirds the price of a small Starbucks cup of whatever it is they call Espresso.
They just opened a new shelter for the Concorde! Was I the only one that expected the price to increase as a result?
Having ranted that, I agree with the comment made that the AVP should have announced the price hike in advance. Just changing it overnight without advance warning is very sloppy.
If it’s to pay for Concorde’s hut, then charge it to the Concorde part of the AVP.
Perspective is NOT at issue here, in fact it is totally pointless. “Well it’s only a pound, a BMW car went up £500” Pointless comparison.
With BoE rate at 0.5%, RPI (RPI 04 tables) 12 months to Jan 09 at 0.1%, escalation expected to be within 2% in 2009. Need I go on?
10p rise is still 5 times escalation forecast 2009. Recession? Yeah, making the scheisters richer because good men do nothing. AVP are not the only sinners here either.
It’s typical of the modern unethical business practices, hit the easiest target the hardest, because (a) They are too worn-down to fight back (b) Because they NEED the service and have no option.
I am not ranting about a £1 (I don’t read papers or drink expensive froth, nor drive a tractor BTW) I am sincerely speaking about the general “Rip-off Britain”. It has to stop.

Total support of Grey Area!
I simply CANNOT believe the amount of people on here that are SUPPORTING a 100% increase in a Service. Is this the result of the offsprings of Thatchers Britain? Probably!

This “Never mind, mustn’t grumble” attitude of my fellow countrymen is a sad, very sad sign of the demise of society. It’s such attitudes that allow these highway robbing scheisters to get away with it.
Where’s the boycott? Where’s the protests? Peaceful of course, don’t go torching the place.
And, furthermore, most “Spotters” go on pushbikes don’t they? Easy target, doubling that fee. AVP know that the regular users are spotters, they will have to put up or shut up. The odd person driving there for a day out won’t mind the 25% rise….if they knew the previous price anyway.
So, it’s up to you regulars to vote with your feet. YOU have the power, not these corporate muggers.

Compared to the lack of facilities most of us have yes it is still cheap for what you have. I can’t recall what we used to pay at LGW.
However just to double prices without comment will upset people. Possibly more a communication problem. Giving people plenty of advance notice with reasons why would have been better although not without complaint I suspect.

If one of the London airports introduced a facility charging £5 for the day to bring the car, and if the view was as good as the AVP, I’d quite happily pay it!
Just my $0.02
Andrew
I agree with that, shame the BAA never gave us that chance. I’m sure that I’m one of many that would have happily paid a realistic fee for the continuation of the LHR rooftop amenities.
By: abutcher1985 - 10th April 2009 at 15:45
I’m not too concerned about this really… and don’t think that anyone should be…
Regardless of the price increase, I still think it still represents excellent value for money. It could be argued that before the price rise it was loss makingly cheap…
When I go to Luton, it costs me £9 to park for an hour and a half at the terminal!
At Gatwick, if you want to spend the day photographing 26R arrivals and park at the terminal, you can expect to spend a similar amount.

Any price increase is unwelcome. Just thank your lucky stars that MAN is not under the “management” of the thankfully soon to be shrunken BAA monolith. Following the loss of the central facilities at both LHR and to a lesser extent LGW there is bug+*r all down this neck of the woods 😡

Charges increase
How has this affected the annual charges?
I wrote them a letter a while ago stating the annual ticket had no benefit to people who travel a reasonable distance and can only visit once a week, twice at the most. I cant recall how much an annual ticket was, but I worked out before that you had to visit 4 or 5 times a week to make it worth while. This was no benefit and it seemed excessive to me?
Does anyone know if they have increased that annual charge?

Does the airport have any control over the AVP charges?
…………………. yes.

Does the airport have any control over the AVP charges? I thought the gatekeepers and ‘wardens’ were Bolling Valley staff, and it was run by the council – or whoever Bolling Valley are.
