A memorial book for victims of the Mt Erebus air disaster in 1979 has probably disappeared for good after being stolen yesterday from St Matthew In The City.
“I don’t have much hope for recovery of the book unless the guy gets a conscience or he dumps it and somebody finds it,” Rev Clay Nelson of the inner city Auckland church said this morning.
The book was taken yesterday afternoon by a male wearing a cap.
It was inside a glass case below the Erebus memorial windows at the church.
“We have security camera footage of it being taken about 12.20pm, but it’s hard to identify the offender,” Mr Nelson said.
The book was put together for a memorial service for the 257 people who lost their lives in the Air New Zealand plane crash on Mt Erebus, Antarctica on November 28, 1979.
The leather-bound book contains the names of all the victims in calligraphic writing.
Reverend Nelson said the book had no value to the offender. He said he was not too hopeful it would be returned.
The offender has been described as a man in his 20s or 30s, of dark complexion, and neatly dressed with a denim jacket, jeans and a cap worn backwards.

Neatly dressed in that lot?
Cap worn backwards is pure Chav/Pikey trademark. Prank or not, he should be Birched for it.

Is it possible this was an april fools prank? For instance, in the northern provinces here it is common for people to “steal” things, and return them a day later. Usually it’s small stuff like letterboxes, but some of the more interesting pranks of the last few years include a gold plated rooster from the top of a churchtower and a large sailing yacht!
