Just a quick one, was getting home this pm at around 15:00, when this almighty loud noise appeared, I looked up and there was a Mon A300 screaming overhead banking quite sharply left with full undercarriage deployed.
Now where I live in Bolton they fly over around 5000ft, this was a lot lower and was wired that the gear was down, anybody got an idea what was going on.

Is that possible? Surely if the aircraft were near landing, the brakes would be cool anyway and if it had just taken off they wouldn’t really have been used, or am I being stupid and missing something? It wouldn’t be the first time I’d been stupid and missed something! 😀

Sometimes after departure the gear can be left down for a few reasons. Most common reason though is to cool the brakes down via the airflow. The reason they can get hot before take off is due to a long taxi, or lots of braking on a downhill taxiway.
Not sure about this particular flight though.

Was thinking of the same thing, possible an engine out due to amount of noise the thing was making, was strange that the wheels were dangling so I guess some tech problem was preventing them from being retracted, also due to the strong winds and the drag the gear was creating hence his foot was to the floor.
Thanks for all the replies chaps

I was in Cheadle, on the approach path and witnessed that very aircraft on final approach and even then it was way lower than it should have been and was much louder tha normal and was flying at an angle like its starboard engine was down or something. I saw a few more follow and they wasn’t on the same angle as the Monarch. IMO it certainly wasn’t a standard approach, whatever was wrong with it. Assuming it had a problem after V1 and was forced to go back to land then the standard go-around height is normaly 2 or 3 thousand feet I think which would explain it’s low height over Bolton.

I wasn’t clear whether the plane was ascending or descending is my excuse anyway!:D

Noot sure about this one but i know one of the A300’s had to return to LGW on Monday after not been able to raise the landing gear!
EDIT
According to PPRUNE sounds like it may have been a Test flight on the other A300 out of MAN today.

Assuming no emergency had been declared, could be standard procedure to cool the brakes if they had overheated for any reason.
