Frankly, that letter sounds like it’s been written by a miserable git who knows nothing whatsoever about aviation.
Know him do you ??? 😉

His point about road traffic congestion does, at least, seem to be a reasonable one.
There seems little sense in expanding air traffic in and out of LBA unless and until the local infrastructure is in place to move the increased numbers of passengers and increased amounts of road freight to and from the airport quickly, reliably and efficiently. Which is clearly not the case at the moment.
Delay costs time and money, and business would simply go elsewhere.

Give him credit, at least he knows Jet2 operate 737’s and 757’s, as opposed to Airbus 747’s and Bombardier MD-83’s?
From the way his letter is written he may as well be.
Sorry, Matt, but we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on this one! 🙂

To be fair, he has a point about the 737’s – they are old, they are high hours…they can be quite dirty!
Conidering the sky is full of other similar aircraft, singling out Jet2’s makes no sense whatsoever. He just sounds like yet another ill informed whinger trying to sound clever by using statements that simply arn’t true to get his point across. Ultimately if you want a quiet life, move away from the damned airport you fool!

All 3 must have been arranged by Air Europe to be part of a BA order/specification. Can’t find any link with the 737s to BA.
If I remember correctly, some aircraft ordered from Boeing were built to the same specification as BA’s under requirements from the CAA for licencing purposes. I understood this to be the case for Air Europe’s Boeing-757s and so they were given the same customer designation as BA’s, i.e. 757-236. The same may have been true for some of the 737s, although I do not udnerstand why as Britannia had operated 737’s before BA originally and had it’s own spec/designation code, as did Dan Air. I thought it only applied to the early 757s delivered to the UK.
I’m not certain about this though….and it’s a very off topic point.

Yeadon Aerodrome has been a part of Yeadon a lot longer than the vast majority of the community around it ….. those annoying people who moves near an airport and then whinges at being able to hear planes.
These have always been my thoughts on airport/aircraft nimbys. I would challenge you to find me more than a handful of people who have lived near a major UK airport since before the airport opened.
Interesting that these people never mention how much quieter most aircraft (even noisy dirty 757s) are now compared with say the early 90’s due to quieter aircraft. When I had 732s 727s 1-11s DC9s etc flying past my house it was far noisier than it is now.
They also never mention the economic benefits that a thriving airport brings to an area.
That said, one argument he does have right is that airport development should be supported by local infrastructure development.

Whilst I’ve never visited the area, my general opinion is quite clear on these issues (we have similar complaints from Gatwick residents). The person bought a house near an airport and thus they should expect noise, road congestion and expansion prospects. It comes as part of the package. More fool them if he/she doesn’t like it.
PS : I agree with Paul regarding the writer’s 757 comments – what a load of tosh!

Frankly, that letter sounds like it’s been written by a miserable git who knows nothing whatsoever about aviation. Of course he’s entitled to his opinion, but Jet2’s ex-BA planes being “noisy and very dirty”? Come on… That’s plain and simply nonsense. Also, is he aware of the fact that a great many airports handling millions of people started life as small airfields? Yeadon Aerodrome has been a part of Yeadon a lot longer than the vast majority of the community around it, and in many ways it grew to serve that community and the wider one around it. It’s used by local people who would only have to travel further to another airport if their local were smaller.
Perhaps he’d be happy if we all travelled to London and flew out of there when we have to? All those extra CO2 emissions from all those cars… All that extra congestion on the aready frequently slow M1… How lovely!
I realise every opinion has an opposite one, but however moderately well constructed that letter may be it really does seem to have been written by one of those annoying people who moves near an airport and then whinges at being able to hear planes.

It may be a well structured letter, but how many of LS’s fleets have a BA link? I reckon a mighty impressive zero. Going off Jethro’s fleet listing, I can find only 3 tell-tale signs of BA involvement with an aircraft (but that’s stretching it a bit!) :
G-LSAJ (ex G-BRJJ, G-OOOT, SE-DUP, G-CDUP, SE-DUP, G-CDUP),
G-LSAD (ex G-BRJD, EC-ESC, G-OOOS, SX-BLW), and
G-LSAA (ex G-BNSF, EC-203, EC-ELS,G-BNSF, EC-744, EC-FFK, TC-ANM, TC-FLB, N241CV).
All 3 must have been arranged by Air Europe to be part of a BA order/specification. Can’t find any link with the 737s to BA.
If I’m right, shouldn’t that information about the lack of a link between Jet2’s fleet and BA be publicised? Plus I really doubt the noise level of a 757 as described “a particularly noisy beast which can be heard long after it has passed into cloud cover.” I doubt it lasts even a minute (on those occasions when MAN is on 05, some departures including 757s head over my flat and I don’t think any noise lasts more than 30 seconds?!). Therefore, if we can quibble about those 2 facts that he is making claims about, which other bits of the letter are also misleading?
By: NCL_Chris - 25th March 2009 at 09:30
To be fair he’s written a well structured letter and I would have similar concerns about hazards around my house and traffic problems if I was him. This makes a change from the usual plane stupid drivel.
By: Rlangham - 24th March 2009 at 22:45
He’s got a point, it IS a bad location for an airport.
And what would you e-mail him to upset him? Why would you want to do that, because he has a different opinion?
