Hi all,
Just a quick heads up and a piece of friendly advice for anyone travelling or looking to book with Virgin Atlantic in the near future…
Please, please check that the name you book your flights with is exactly as it is in your passport (as in word for word, letter for letter!) , otherwise they will charge you £30 for the privielage of changing your name on your booking; even if it is just wrong by one letter!
I have not been caught out by this myself, but I am just letting people know that it could happen, so don’t say you have not been warned.;)

On most flights we have name change comments in pax bookings, eg: Bloggs/Joo Mr (First name should read Joe)
However this is not permitted on flights to the US. All bookings must have the full name as shown in the passport.
Yes, I assume you are right OneLeft, seeing as the airline I represent is a US based carrier, but still just a warning to those out there…its so easy to catch a wrong button on your keyboard (as demonstrated in your example above), so just take a minute or two longer to make sure you got it right in the first place to avoid any hassle and embarrassment at the airport!
I would imagine most (if not all) airlines charge for such changes.
Again, yes, I imagine so, however some airlines simply do not permit name changes at all and thus expect pax to pay for a brand new ticket, which can be a very costly mistake!;)

Cloud 9, if you talking about specific experiences were they for pax travelling to the US? If so i would have thought this is more to do with the US immigration APIS policy than with Virgin.

O’Leary isn’t at Virgin now, is he?!

Rumour has it he’s still a Virgin, owing to his contraceptive personality…;)

the title of this thread is funny. 🙂

What a miserable set of people Virgin are! I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve flown as ‘Poul’ or similar when a foreign promotor has spelled my name wrong when booking flights and it’s never once been a problem. O’Leary isn’t at Virgin now, is he?!

And similarly, be extra careful when making a booking over the telephone. I made the mistake of booking with Expedia last year and they managed to misspell my first name. When I contacted them, they told me that there was nothing they could do and that I would have to book another seat.
After deciding I could not be bothered to deal with Expedia anymore, I approached the airline (Emirates) and they were most helpful.

Thanks for the heads up.
Do they accept shortened version of names? For example, through the ‘Diamond Club’ all my bmi bookings appear under ‘Sam’ and there’s no problems there…
Nope, they are quite insistant on it being the same as the passport!
For example, I had a passenger the other day who’s first name appeared in his passport as Thomas, but he put Tom on his booking…and he got clobbered with the charge!
If you look at it from the airlines perspective though, they do have a valid reason, however, I do somehow think that £30 is somewhat excessive and could be a way of generating ancilleray revenue because they know that passengers could easily overlook the small details such as a name.
Like I said in my first post, make sure its exactly as it is in your passport; doesnt take more than a few seconds to check your passport beforehand and then you should avoid any embarrasment at the airport on the day and not have to pay any penalty!
