bmi Diamond Club

Recently joined bmi Diamond Club since I’ve become quite a frequent flyer with them. But just wondering, if there’s anyone else a member here, what the difference is between status miles and membership miles?

I’ve got 3000 membership miles so far (don’t know where from!) and booked two more flights with them so wondering if the miles will go to status or membership?

I’m a member, but am still currently bottom of the pond – where I intend to stay… Yes it’s by my own will that I’m at the bottom level – honest!!

Status miles determine what level you are in the program – blue, silver, gold, etc. On most trips you earn status miles, and when you pass certain milestones, you go up from blue to silver and then to gold. At the end of a membership year, hopefully you’ve made silver or gold (which remains valid for the next year), the status miles are set to zero, and you start earning again which will determine your status for the following year – i.e. membership level is for a year, and the status miles get reset to zero at the start of each year and you start earning your status again. Destination miles are those you can spend to get award tickets. They do not expire or roll over each year – as long as there is activity on your Diamond Club account within a certain period (I think it used to be once every year?) then the destination miles remain in your account to use when you want for awards. On most trips, you earn destination miles – in other words, on most trips you earn both status miles AND destination miles. However, there are a few airlines (Virgin might be one??) where you earn only destination miles and not status miles – this means that in such cases you earn points to redeem for awards at a later date, but the trip does not help up your status. You obviously want destination miles as these help towards awards, but status points are good too as you get better privileges as a gold (lounge access on any Star Alliance airline, for example) than you do as a blue or silver.

I travel with them quite a bit for work, so dont get to earn miles etc, but I still get to travel up front and use the lounge!

Yeah, I am a member of bmi’s Diamond Club; its suppose to be better than BA’s Executive Club scheme and you can claim points if travelling on any Star Alliance carrier and other selected partners of bmi, including Virgin Atlantic!

I was given automatic entry into Diamond Club through my Mastercard credit card…and was told that if I spent £250 within the first 90 days of using the card, I would recieve an additional 20,000 bonus miles…enough for a free return trip to anywhere in Europe, so seemed like a good deal!

what the difference is between status miles and membership miles?

I think your getting confused here. There are only two types of miles available…Membership ‘Status’ Miles and Destination Miles. So there is no difference between ‘status’ miles and ‘membership’ miles as you say because they are both the same thing!:)

Anywyas, according to bmi’s website…

Membership status miles are simply used to determine your level of membership e.g. Blue/Blue+/Silver/Gold. These are valid for 12 months and are simply used to determine your level of membership.

Destinations miles are the ones you can spend on rewards for yourself e.g. flights.

Hope that helps.
