Does this Virgin consortium actually exist or is it just the SRB publicity machine?…

Well at first I think it was a bit difficult to tell…but this news article from 30/11/08 seems to suggest Virgin are interested in putting a bid together, but it does not mention EasyJet, so not sure if they are involved or not?

http://www.uk-airport-news.info/gatwick-airport-news-301108a.htm

Virgin don’t need to own LGW in order to operate more flights there.

Of course I know this, but if they did win the bid, they would naturally increase the no. of services they provided from the airport in order to put as much pressure on BA as possible, but until they know the actual outcome, I dont see them adding any new routes just yet.

If they are successful though I could easily see a JFK/EWR route being one of the first to be introduced, and possibly LAX, ORD & MIA as other possible routes to be launched soon after.

I would not be at all surprised to see them pull out of LGW altogether to be honest….. and also if Virgin are successful with their consortium bid to buy LGW, as they have said they would launch more services from LGW if they do get it!

I think you might be right, I can imagine a day when BA no longer operates from LGW.

Does this Virgin consortium actually exist or is it just the SRB publicity machine? There was that very strange thing where he said Easy were in on it and the next day Easy denied it! Also Virgin don’t need to own LGW in order to operate more flights there.

I would not be at all surprised to see them pull out of LGW altogether in the future, especially if they get approval for the alliance with AA and IB and their proposed merger with Qantas, all three of whom only operate to/from LHR and none out of LGW!

Also, if Virgin are successful with their consortium-led bid to buy LGW, they have said they would launch more services from LGW, so BA might consider focusing their attention on operating as many services from LHR as possible.

But this is just my opinion.:)

not enough Airbuses to replace them?

I wouldn’t say not enough, more don’t want to replace them all.

There is still some flying at LGW (especially short haul) which breaks even at best or loses money. This is either being reduced in frequency, dropped or transferred to LHR to see if it can cut it there.

LGWs place in BA now seems to be aimed at longhaul leisure routes which should hopefully see some development in the forseeable future.

As I said before this is old news within the company. I’m not quite sure why GMB Union or the news channels are suddenly excited about it on a December Sunday afternoon.

It must be a no news day at Sky News, this is ancient history within BA.
