Tempelhof

In case anyone missed it, Berlin Tempelhof closed yesterday.
Another historic city airport gone… What a shame.

Does anyone know which airlines used to fly from Tempelhof at all?

Most recently it was very limited. Brussels Airlines, Streling and one of the regional german carriers (can’t remember which, but they operated Metroliners to and from Templehof if I remmber rightly) were the last operators. Brussels Airlines still took advantage of being able to park undercover to allow their pax to disembark in the dry.

I’m in mixed minds about the closure, it is sad because of being such an historic place, and there is definately a role for some city airports. On the otherhand though, we all have to accept that aviation has to become more sustainable, and it’s environmental impacts must be measured against the benefits offered by services/facilities. In the case of Templehof, the local noise and air quality issues outweighed the benefits of retaining the facility.

I read somewhere that two AN-2’s and a Cessna could not take off before 00.00 LT for some reason and were refused T/O afterwards because from that moment Tempelhof was not an airport anymore. Now they have to be transported out of the not-an-airport by truck. Anyone knows the full story?

Tillerman.

the two An-2 and the cessna must fly under VFR, but the weather was this day really bad, so they and no chance to leave the airport. they are now in the hangar.

Pan Am, BEA and Air France all operated from Tempelhof.

Lloyd International’s Bristol Britannias were regular visitors at one time, too.

Fascinating history concerning Tempelhof, didn’t the Nazis use conscript labour to service Luftwaffe fighters in large underground tunnels during the war ?

Berlin’s a city I’ve spent quite a lot of time in and yet I never made the effort to go to Tempelhof when I was there. I’ve been past it, but never actually been to the airport. I really regret that now as even driving past it seemed to be so full of character, much more so that SXF or TXL. Any idea what the site will be used for?

From Wikipedia:

“A “Goodbye Tempelhof” gala was held at Tempelhof airport for eight hundred invited guests in the last hours of October 30th. Meanwhile protesters against the closing held a candle vigil in front on the Platz der Lufbrücke. The last commercial flight was a Cirrus Airlines Dornier 328 that departed at 21:50 towards Mannheim. “Time to say goodbye” was sung to the spectators on the tarmac at the conclusion. At precisely four and a half minutes before midnight the last two airplanes – a historical Junkers Ju 52 and an airlift “raisin bomber” Douglas DC-3 – took off in parallel, waved their wings, and flew off south-east to Schönefeld airport. The runway lights were switched off at midnight”.
