What's happening with G-ECOE (FlyBE DHC-8)

I have heard that tomorrow G-ECOE, a FlyBE DHC-8, is due in at Eindhoven. Here it will be repainted fully white, no titles. Considering the plane was delivered barely 2 months ago it seems odd to me that FlyBE would be leasing out the plane. At least, I assume that is to be the case. Anyone know more?

After the run of landing incidents at SAS with the aircraft last year, didn’t SAS (effectively on behalf of Wideroe and AirBaltic) announce that they would only operate new-build NextGen Q400s in future, which I believe have a modified landing gear assembly?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Bombardier offer replacement landing gear to all Dash 8 customers?

It seems to me that Flybe, who appear to have every confidence in the original Q400 but are also presently taking delivery of numerous NextGen Q400s, have spotted an opportunity to make a quick buck from SAS who can’t get their hands on the NextGen Q400 quick enough?

Cheers, Adam

As Deano has pointed out, I haven’t got it exactly right. Yes, it would seem that FlyBe are sending a brand new aircraft to Wideroe. G-ECOE in fact was delivered when I was talking to this guy at EXT (1st August). A canadian pilot came on the scanner with what was apparently a delivery flight number. I haven’t got round to editing those shots yet but would post one here if I had.
Funny coincidence, that.

There is a compicated leasing deal going on between FlyBE, SAS and their susbidary Wideroe. I couldn’t get my head round it when It was explained to me by an EXT local. But basically long story shot: FlyBE have taken some of SAS’s retired fleet of Q400s (after the ladning gear accidents last year) to fill in for FlyBE while they wait for their orders to be delivered from Bombardier. SAS originally intended for these aircraft to go to Wideroe, but (I can’t remember why) they were not able to fly them at the time. So they came up with a lease deal with Flybe.
There was another element to it, I think some of FlyBE’s orders went to wideroe or something for a short term lease as well.

So I assume it has something to do with that.

So what you are saying is that FlyBE has leased the planes from SAS pending delivery of their new-build planes. Then as new-builds are delivered the older ones are tranferred to Wideroe?

What I do not understand is that G-ECOE is a new-build? Did FlyBE agree to take the older DHC-8s, and trade them in for their newly delivered DHC-8s? Why would they possibly want to do that. And why would they fly the plane for 2 months, and then send them to Wideroe. Why not straight from Canada to Norway?

This actually opens up even more questions. For instance, why is SAS accepting DHC-8s in the first place. If another incident where to happen the media will simply butcher Wideroe and SAS. They’d have a field day. That’s a big risk SAS are running. Especially considering SAS’s public announcement the planes would be retired and the rather open accusations SAS made towards Bombardier!

Heck, even without an incident the media could throw accusations at SAS. The plane has a very bad reputation in Scandinavia for obvious reasons.

Can’t reveal company information on the net of course but Dan is close but not quite correct

I flew the last revenue service of G-ECOE on Friday night, she is now out of service going to Wideroe, and she won’t be coming back to Flybe. Wideroe already have G-ECOB from us as well
