Buses 350 (Terminal 5 – Hayes) and 423 (Terminal 5 – Hounslow) stop in Longford and at the Thistle Hotel. From the other direction the 423 can be caught from Bath Road on the northern perimeter as can the 81 (Hounslow – Slough). I think these buses would be free if getting on and off from within the Heathrow free travel area and all run fairly regularly during the day – about every 10 – 20 minutes.

hope its not too late for you Jason
The “field” for 09L is located on Stanwell Moor Road just before Longford roundabout( junction of stanwell Moor Road and the A4 Bath Road) no idea of public transport, but, if you tell a taxi driver to take you to the above you’ll be set. (BTW this is essentially in the middle of nowhere.. no shops/petrol stations etc.. within decent walking distance… so take yer pieces and drink… and maybe a potty too:o )
I’ve not yet ventured into T5 yet, but, watching it getting built, there looks like a ramp going up to what i guess is departure level, this ramp looks an awesome place for shooting 09L as you are on eye level with a lump captain!!.. don’t know if security would allow anyone hanging around on it tho…???
FYI for shooting at the field you will need a smaller lens, as you are very close to the aircraft on final.
Just as an aside…. i tend not to bother with that area..just find it too close!, a great place to shoot stuff i find is in Poyle. which is basically a big set of industrial estates, to the right of 09L finals, with loads of places offering great shooting spots, Poyle Road,Mathiesen way,Colndale road all good places. Always see lots of photographers skulking around various nooks and crannies round this way, seems quite popular.
Hope this helps.

Is that a ‘Dennis’ Hoppa bus perchance

Could be. Guess you will just have to wait and see who is driving it 😉

Use the Hoppa bus from the central area if thats where you fly into. It will take you to the Thistle hotel and then its only a 7-10 minute walk haven’t been in the pub but it sure looks nice.

I haven’t been to the airport for a while – but this is how I did it: works everytime. 😀

Taxi to the Thistle London Heathrow Hotel (in the top right hand corner of the airport). For me, the taxi would have been from the terminals or Hatton Cross. Now that T5 is open though, you could get the underground to this terminal and then a taxi from the terminal. A lot quicker and less expensive. A taxi from Hatton Cross will cost you £15 or more.

Walk out of the hotel and turn left – and walk along the road, through the quaint little village (little old English country pub type village – that sort of thing) until you get to some roundabouts. Go over them, and walk to the landing lights of 09L. Its a nice 10-15 minute walk.

The hotel and village is in Longford.

You don’t really need any more info than that – because the village sits on a single main road its a simple walk and once you get to the end of the village, its quite easy – just head towards where the aircraft that are landing over the road. You really couldnt miss it.

Getting back, go back to the Hotel and you can get on the LHR hotel hopper busses (you may have to pay because you are not hotel guests), or alternatively, you could go past the hotel and out onto the A4 and try and suss out the public busses to the airport.

Just beyond the hotel is a McDonalds and a petrol station – good for supplies and easy to get to.

Hope that helps

EDIT: Thinking about it a little bit, if you get a taxi from T5 to Longford, you’ll drive past the photography spot on your way – but the taxi driver may not be too happy to let you out there – just hold your breath and let the taxi take you to the hotel. Also, Longford is literally an Olde English pub village, so that will keep PMN happy.

Thanks, Jason! I just found out (by kind advice form our very own Grey Area) there’s a shuttle bus from T5 to Hatton Cross, so it should be easily walkable!

That’s exactly the info I’m trying to find out as well! I’ll be at LHR from around 6:30am and flying out to DUB at 15:50. At least it looks like it’ll be sunny!
