Nigel Rudd BAA on BBC Radio 4 'Today' programme

Hi all

Mr Rudd said that the last runways built in southern England were during WW2.

Just when did Gatwick and Heathrow start serving airline traffic?

From memory, LHR started civilian operations in the late 40’s (1947?), and the hard runways were already there as the airfield had been under construction as a transport base right at the end of the war.

I was under the impression that LHR was always envisaged as London’s airport,
it was built using wartime regulations to acquire the land,

So London City Airport doesn’t count then?

Opened 1987. 750 metres long.

Anyone would think airliners are using the WW2 runways:rolleyes:

Gatwick’s hard runway may well have been built after the war, from memory it was a grass airfield during the war.

No doubt others will know the facts for certain.
