We’ve had plenty of debate, both emotional and rational as to the current business practices of our former state airline, much of it very informative and entertaining. So without wishing to re-open that particular can of EU approved worms, does anyone think that when the time comes for it’s next major rebranding exercise that “British Airways” will and perhaps should become ‘BA’ ?
Should a more subtle version of the union flag on the tail be introduced, or indeed just a large ‘BA’ logo with a ‘ba.com’ graphic down the sharp end. How would a stylised ‘BA’ logo look, any ideas designers out there ?
Discuss… 😉

British Airways is unlikely to rebrand itself….
……but, with predators circling constantly, the private equity firm that takes it over most certainly will.
No doubt, and hey… that’ll just be a business decision too.:p

That’s interesting Sandy, I wonder though if the ‘BA’ part should be more ‘in your face’ a bit like when they dropped the airways and bigged up the ‘British‘ back in the early 80’s…

Thats looks very smart, although i’d still prefer to see full ‘British Airways’ titles personally.

I agree with you dazza id still prefer the titles,
i dont think its a good idea because if you take Excel Airways who changed to XL it realy doesnt make sense because you still pronouce it as ‘excel’ i agree they should have a fresher livery but if it was changed from British airways to ‘BA’ it just wouldnt seem right

Can anyone guess what the “L” stands for???
I have no idea what it stands for but they’re often a slightly off-white colour and always have a red ring around the end of the barrel… :p
I don’t know whether BA should rebrand or not, but I do think they should lift the silly ‘one item of hold luggage per passenger’ restriction so that we as a band can use them again!

I think British Airways should rebrand itself as ‘BA.com’ as it is more modern and in-keeping with the times.
It is forever marketing ‘BA.com’ on the television, radio and online, and even in newspapers.
The only thing I dont think they should change is their slogan ‘Have you clicked yet?’, as I think that is just great!
As for the livery…I think a brand new scheme needs to be designed altogether for the same reason really.
I do agree though that there will be some out there that will always refer to it as ‘British Airways’ because of its ‘national’ resemblance.
One thing I am thinking though is…could a simple rebranding such as changing a name honestly have an impact on the number of people that decide to fly with them? I think it would be a sorry state of affairs if people did decide to boycott the airline just for doing something like this, its just a name after all…as long as they continue to offer the same service at good and often better prices than some LCC’s, then they should not worry too much about it?

Ren Frew, always enjoy a healthy debate with you. Interesting comment, I do see more of a lean towards the use of the shortened BA rather than the full British Airways at the moment. The recent newspaper and billboard adverts also advertise as ba.com without any mention of the full British Airways wording also, so yes, maybe some subtle changes on the way.
Billboards and signs in the UK have carried a simple BA.com for sometime.
Thats because the vast majority of BA’s target audience, the travelling Brits, know that BA = British Airways. The Speedmarque will always be somewhere on the same sign/billboard also. Together, only few people will mistake the brand for anything else.
BA will remain British Airways. To do anything else makes no real sense.
Having said that: (Just to satisfy my curiosity)

I think that BA will always keep themselves known formally as British Airways. That gives them the flexibility to switch between both as the need requires.
In terms of branding the aircraft and the signage in the airports I think that it will always remain British Airways too. Whilst in the UK most people can probably tell you that BA means British Airways (although by no means everybody would know that I’m sure) but it is how the brand is viewed abroad, especially in the USA that is important. BA isn’t so instantly recognised as British Airways abroad and so I think it would reduce marketing exposure rather than raise it if the name was shortened with no obvious explanation of what it stood for.
