In Bucharest, a B737 rolling on take off run hit a car which was on the runway! Over on Pprune they’re talking about it and here’s a link to some amazing footage filmed by a passenger onboard at the time….

Oh no. That´s different stuff, I know. It was the Bucast event; I saw it published in a Spanish newspaper.

Thanks Bmused55, then it makes sense.
I had read in a newspaper that it was a baggage vehicle, so I found it really unusual.
Was the report you saw of this incident?

It seems the “handling” vehicle was actually a maintenance van of some type, doing some work on runway lights. This may be a simple case of the Tower not checking with them that they were clear before clearing the Tarom flight for take off.

What was a handling vehicle doing in the middle of the runway?. I understand that a plane gets lost, but a lorry?.
Their normal operating area usually very far away from the runway.
The video is amazing, but it´s a pity he didn´t finish it. He should be going on recording, even during the evacuation. I know it´s hard in a terrible moment, but it should be really interesting and frightening.
I am glad nothing serious had happened.

Zero fatalities, minor injuries to a few relating to evacuation.
The driver of the ground vehicle fled as he saw the approaching lights of the 737 so is unhurt.
A good flight deck crew managed to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat here. By that I mean they made this survivable with their excellent handling of their crippled aircraft.
No post crash fire, some are commending the flight deck crew’s quick reflexes in shutting everything down as the aircraft slid to a halt so as not to provide the spark that could send it all up in flames.
