Airbus and Boeing model numbers

I notice that British Airways initial order is for 8 787-8 and 16
787-9 aircraft.
Will these become 787-836 and 787-936 on delivery? Likewise the 747-8I
for Lufthansa will they become 747-830I on delivery?
Why have Boeing decided to start with series 800, 900 and not the more
logical series 100, 200, 300 etc, Similarly Airbus A-350 will come in
-800, -900 flavours to start with, with -1000 and -1200 to follow. Can
some one please explain, or have I missed something important.
Thanks in anticipation,
Be lucky
David

Well, no offense meant to the Chinese, but, I’ll stick to the term retards.

Why should you have “luck” when flying ? Would it be something like “Hey, I’m flying on a lucky plane, so I probably won’t crash” or “That plane is lucky, I sure can gamble in it and win a lot” ?

Sorry, but a plane is a big, high tech machine, bought by large companies. If the ones deciding what to buy base themselves on luck, there is a SERIOUS problem.

As for the passengers, except the fact that they couldn’t care less what the plane is, in most democratic coutries, they’ll fly whatever suits their travel needs for the lesser cost, and in other countries, they most likely won’t have the chance to travel anyway, and if they do, I don’t think they’ll have much of a choice as for the airline or plane either.
And the odd passenger who would rather fly in a plane that has an 8 in its designation, sorry, but he shouldn’t even travel anyway.

some retards, 8 is seen as a lucky number Just so. 737-800 emerged logically, but A380, A350-800, 787 and 747-8 exploit the Chinese homophone (one sound, 2 meanings) of eight and money. Asia is the perceived lead market for all.

I believe it is more or less as Frank explains, with Boeing the -100,200,300,400,500
all seen as “old” -600,700,800,900 are all the “Next Generation” a symbol of cleaner/quieter/cost efficient aircraft.
FYI different airlines/etc… do have different Boeing customer codes.. all here:

Yes, the last 2 digits with Boeing are customer specific.

Now, for the -800, 900, … I’d say this is just some stupid marketing stunt because for some retards, 8 is seen as a lucky number or something like that.
Instead of sticking to a technical and logical numbering, they are apparently pulling marketing tricks like you’d expect to see for mass production cars, or maybe washing powder.

I guess the next thing will be to add some “eco” feel to their planes to please the ever growing crowd of tree huggers.
