BAA staff voted in favour of strike action today which means that staff at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton will be on strike.
The dates are as follows:
7th and 14th January 2008 for 24 hrs
17th January for 48 hrs
Looks like there going to be some disruption to air travel. However BAA have said they will try their utmost to reduce the disruption caused.

James, unfortunally i, personally, dont think that much will be diverted to MSE. The ramp can only handle 2 A320s at a time, as im sure you are aware. And the terminal building can only accomadate 300-400 pax at anyone time. I can however see the Oasis HK flights divert to MSE, as they said last year they will use MSE as there divert airport.
Josh
Mate the ramp can handle four A320 or two 747 , When BA went on strike they wanted to use MSE 😎 I see if I can find out if airline is going apart from Oasis.

Long Haul flights in/out of LHR are supposidly going into BHX. EK and BA have “booked” permissions to use there on the selected dates. – This info is from a friend
With regards to STN/LGW flights, i think these flights may divert to LTN. Especially the EZY ones. Although ramp space may be limited.

New Year Airport Strikes Called Off
Updated:17:27, Monday December 31, 2007The first of a series of new year strikes by workers at seven airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, has been called off following a breakthrough in peace talks over a row about pensions.
Thousands of firefighters, security and clerical workers were due to walk out for 24 hours next Monday.
It was to have been the first of three stoppages in protest at a decision by BAA to close its final salary pension scheme to new workers.
Following several hours of negotiations, officials from the Unite union said an agreement had been reached in principle to hold “proper consultations” over the future of the pension scheme before any changes are made.
London’s airports face strikes
The agreement will be discussed by union representatives on Thursday but in the meantime next Monday’s strike has been called off.
Further strikes planned for January 14 and January 17/18 will be called off if the deal is accepted by the union representatives on Thursday.
A union spokesman said: “The company has agreed there will be proper discussions before any decision is reached on the future of the pension scheme.”
The breakthrough came after almost eight hours of talks at a secret location between leaders of Unite and the Public and Commercial Services union and officials from BAA.
It will come as a relief to hundreds of thousands of travellers.
Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports would have been closed by next week’s walkout.

If you’re going to strike you want to do it when it’ll have the most impact..hence right in the middle of the Xmas holiday season

As i said above Si i think with there been no BAA fire cover at an airport it means that aircraft cant land or take off. Could be a possible Diversion.

I was planning MAN to LCY return with VLM on the 14th for a Training course in the City…
I know these airports are not affected but there is always a knock on affect, may just go on the GNER the day before and return on the 14th via the GNER..
Bit of a shame as i was looking forward flying into LCY.
Rick
London City should be fine dont think they are owned by BAA, This may be bad news but it means some airlines will come and visit MSE 😀

…….or me , I’m out of Gatwick supposedly on the 14th with Thomsonfly. Still , I expect to see the lovely Brendan Gold of Unite , the union involved , handing out the tea and coffee’s to those he has inconvinienced.
Also very interesting that he has called a strike “with strong backing” based on the fact that of the Unite workforce members involved only 53% could give a toss enough to vote about it and about 1.25 in 3 voted no. Therefore , I make this a strike which is endorsed by about 31-33% of the those that will be striking. The man is a total A-Hole.
