Sound of turbojets and rockets

How does the sound of a Concorde – 4 turbojets with reheat generating something like 70 tons thrust in total – compare with the sound of a shuttle – 5 rockets lifting a 2000 ton assembly vertically?

And what are the other loudest planes?

Boeing 707?

DC-8?

i think it is at least twice as loud as a B52 on take off the last couple of times I have seen them.

Twice as loud? As in 6dB louder? Was that A or C weighted?

OK, I’ll stop being a sarcastic sound engineer now! :p

Good question

Im guessing there is a huge exclusion zone around shuttle take offs, so if you got as close as you could it would be relatively quiet.

A B1 is probably similar to the concorde because it has 4 afterburning engines, i think it is at least twice as loud as a B52 on take off the last couple of times I have seen them.

….Surely Shuttle is louder, and it flies.

And what about B-52?

When the Shuttle “flies” (ie, on the way down) it’s a glider.

On the way up it’s the payload of a large ballistic missile.

And what about the B52? It’s a military heavy bomber not an airliner so your comparision isn’t valid.

Daft question, as I said earlier. 😎

Well, people complain that Concorde is loud. Surely Shuttle is louder, and it flies.

And what about B-52?

Of course there’s no comparison. The numbers say it all.

Bit of a daft question in my personal (ie, non-moderatorial) opinion. 😎
