Howdy,
I am an American and returned from a trip from Boston to Brussels and Dakar Senegal on 8/2/07. I flew on US Airways (NEVER, NEVER AGAIN!) and TAP.
The ininary and what happens follows:
7/21 BOS-PHL connecting to PHL-BRU. Took the BOS-PHL flight with no problems. The PHL-BRU flight was cancelled at 3 AM on 7/22. There were four US Airways flights to Europe the evening of 7/21 that were cancelled. Luggage was lost and I had no luggage for the day I was stuck at the airport in Philadelphia on 7/21-7/22. I had to pay $ 321.00 for a hotel and also had topurchase some cloths plus a few other things like toothpaste, etc. US Airways told the 200 people traveling on the PHL-BRU flight that was cancelled flight that there were no hotel rooms available (NOT TRUE!). They gave us a piece of paper with a toll free number to call and we were told the same thing (mind you it was 3 AM!). As noted, I was able to get a room at the airport Marriott for $ 321.00. I got to the hotel at 6 AM after getting a new flight to BRU on 7/22 and dealing with the lost luggage. I departed on US Airways on 7/22. The luggage arrived in BRU on 7/23.
7/25 BRU-LIS-DKR on TAP (no problems)
8/2 DKR-LIS on TAP (departed 2:30 AM late 8/2/07) Connected to US Airways from LIS – PHL (8/2/07) luggage (3 bags) did not show up in PHL. PHL-BOS and arrive 7:30 PM (8/2/07). Luggage still did not show up. 8/3 Called US Airways four times. Still no luggage.
Does anyone know what my rights are if any as an American traveling to and through the EU on EU and American airlines? I wasted a lot of money on a hotel in PHL not to mention losing the money I paid for one night at a Hilton in Brussels for the night of 7/22 which was not refundable. In addition, the lost baggage has all of my commercial samples which was the point of the trip to Senegal. If I lose this, the trip to Senegal and spending about $ 6,000.00 was a complete waste of money.
I am going back to Senegal and possibly Ghana in September (ON A REAL AIRLINE THIS TIME NO MATTER WHAT THE COST!).
Help is greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

But the trip to Senegal was great
I do want to add that the trip to Senegal was GREAT! I got more done than I could have expected (unless I do not get my luggage back). What a nice place!

US Airways just wanted us to go away
Hi Bill,
Sounds like you have had a rotten trip…I would of expected US Airways to handle cancellations much better than that.
Suggest you have a look at the following link…it is US Airway’s so called ‘Customer’s First Plan’:

Did they give you any info regarding the cancellation at all; what was the reason for the cancellation?
From US Airways website:
Howdy,
It was as if US Airways wanted us and the passengers on the other EU flights to go away. Jet Blue had a melt down last February and handled it correctly (a refund and a free flight). USless offered me $ 350.00. That does not even cover the hotel cost loss in PHL and BRU! They stink. Next time I will fly (first choice) Air France, SN Brussels, or Delta.

You are not entitleed to any compensation for the delay on your luggage although some airlines will give you something as a little sweetner.
I dealt with delayed US luggage for 2 years and I can safely say they wont give you anything.
However they should give you back at least some of the money you spent on the hotel, they are obliged to provied accomidation when a flight is cancelled and they cant offer an alternative straight away, Im quite disgusted that they didnt and totally lies to you about there not being any available rooms!
(at least according to European law)
Make sure you have a reciept for that and send it into their claims department keeping a copy of everything for yourself.
It pretty shambolic that they couldnt even offer you an overnight kit with some toothpaste etc! even some of the LCCs offer that!

From US Airways website:
When a US Airways flight on which the customer is being transported is delayed, canceled or has caused a missed connection creating an overnight stay for the customer, US Airways will provide one night’s lodging.
US Airways will not provide hotel accommodations when a flight is delayed, canceled or diverted due to circumstances beyond our control, such as weather or Air Traffic Control decisions.
