regional aircraft debate…

Had a fairly long chat with a friend from Canada earlier, and we were discussing about regional aircraft, and noted the fact that there are so many different ‘regional’ aircraft out there, which aircraft and/or manufacturer is best suited to the ‘regional’ market?

We both discussed this in rather great detail and both of us ended up agreeing that Bombardier’s range of CRJ aircraft were the best, even more so since they have launched the CRJNG (or NextGen, as it is also known!).

I watched this rather interesting video on the Bombardier website about the NextGen aircraft, it is very informative! Have a look: http://www.crj.bombardier.com/CRJ/en/NextGen/index.html

Would be interesting to know what other forum members think about this particular market and what type of aircraft is most suitable?

Embraer here any day.
Bombardiers are bizjets on steroids.
Wonder how the newcomers will do. Sukhoi, AVIC, Mitsubishi Heavy.
Getting quite crowded in a few years. And Embraer has a good product already now.

Dunno what you’re smoking if you think the CRJ is the best regional jet, at least from a passenger perspective.

As a passenger, in the 50 seat market I’d ALWAYS prefer a EMB145 over a CRJ – the 1+2 seating is much more agreeable than the 2+2 in the CRJ100/200. In the 70+ seat market, again I’d ALWAYS take an E-Jet (170/190) over a CRJ700/900 if I had a choice as the Embraers are far more spacious feeling. The CRJ also has too low windows and is far noiser than the Brasilian contender.

I don’t see how you could come to the conclusion that CRJs are the best regional aircraft around – and by that I mean I don’t understand how you can ‘rate’ aircraft and find a ‘best one’.

Yeah, what is written on paper i.e. the specifiactions of the aircraft may give you a first glance answer, but the issue, is it not, is whether an aircraft meets an airline’s needs? Each airline will need something that fits them best, so one model that works well and is the ‘best’ for one airline, won’t be suitable for another airline.

CRJs are simply awful aircraft. Try asking any frequent flyer which they’d prefer, an ERJ or a CRJ, and every single one you speak to will tell you with no hesitation: ERJ.

Personally I try and avoid both (No First Class on AA’s RJs!) but I’ll happily sit in an ERJ for a few hours if I have to. CRJs are just painful, especially if you are over a certain height.

Hmm, has Bombardier’s best line lately not been the Dash-8s?

I know they have been investing in composites lately, so I’d expect them to start down a similar route to Boeing and Airbus with the 787/350 respectively.
