Spotted this link on Ringway Reports http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/web.nsf/Content/Runwayredesignation
So the runways changing to 23/05.
Never seen this done before. Is this just happening at Manchester or other airports around the UK?
Thanks,
Chris

Southampton is now 02/20, I believe it used to be 03/21 a few years back. Incidentally, Southampton used to have three runways!

Will be strange not hearing the 24’s/06’s on the scanner!! But its a natural phenomenon caused by the magnetic field of the earth, and a lot of airpots will be re-designating over the next century i’m sure.
ASpalding, i’ve also heard this. I also saw it on a news website somewhere many weeks ago!

Sorry to go off of the topic slightly chaps but i heard a rumour about the second runway at MAN.
Because of the increased movements this summer, (over last) that it warrants the use of 6R/24L during the curfew. Dont know how many movements were going to take place during this period but i just heard that they were at times going to use this runway between 12-3 at some point.
Am i along the right lines, or just full of rubbish??

Also at LBA 15/33 became 14/32. This happens because of a natural variation in the magnetic north from time to time I believe.

This also happened at LBA a couple of years back to the secondary runway (now a taxiway). 28/10 became 27/09.

I seem to remember reading that this happened at Heathrow years ago. The runway position hasnt changed but the designation did due to a change in magnetic variation.
I believe Heathrow used to be 10/28

Chris,
I have seen this before at military airfields due to the movement of the magnetic north by .x of a degree per year until such point where the runway heading does not align with the magnetic north heading. It is usually reflected in aeronautical and os charts with a note saying the last time the mag north was checked so that when you take a compass bearing you must add / take away the variation (depending where you are in the world).
