Bristol Filton.

Good evening chaps.

This coming weekend i am flying to Bristol en route to Swansea to see the girlfriend. I remember the last time i flew into BRS we over flew Filton. So i was wondering is it worth a visit?. Is there anything on interest in at the moment? and is there a viewing area?.

Cheers.

not for much longer 😉

I doubt that any are flying now. They had ten DC-8’s and there are now none on the Ghanian register. The last photo of a flying DC-8 was taken at Luxembourg in September 2006.

A ‘sorry’ to the other gents aswell for the confusion. It was a typing error. I got excited with my keyboard and hit ‘9’ instead of ‘8’

Oh i’ve really lost it now – Although it was 0100 in the morning

Yes sorry Adam I was generalising because I didn’t have the time to explain, you are indeed correct it is a Privatair 319

No worries mate. I thought i had it wrong afterall the A319 and A320 look very similar from the A38 😀

MK currently have seven 747’s on strength. No mention of DC9’s and no photos of them on ‘Airliners’?

You mean DC-8s!!! …which are being withdrawn from the fleet soon if they haven’t been already. I spent a week with MK a few years ago on some work exp and they did an engine run on 9G-MKF (DC-8-55) and let me sit in the FE’s seat! :p

I wouldn’t say Filton’s worth a visit either, there’s never a lot going on unless you’re lucky enough to catch at a busy time.

BRS however is well worth it! 😀

Adam, I am pretty certain MK have withdrawn all their DC9s from service now, I have a friend who is an engineer for them based at Filton and he says this is the case, they still have 2 parked around the back of the MK hangar (for now), not sure if they are being, or have been sold yet

I was lucky enough to fly in to Filton just before the Red Arrows arrived last november, it was a spectacular sight to see them all split off to land 1 by 1.

As I typed my last message an MK Airlines 742 went over my house on the way into Filton.

Filton

on the odd week, we do get the odd “Herc” in for training from Lyneham, and even some “Lynx”, also if lucky the “filton spit” does regulary buzz the house when practising!:) we even had the red’s in recently for a game of golf!

To be honest, (and this is just MY opinion) but I wouldn’t bother visiting Filton. If you after spotting or photographing aircraft your best bet is to spend a few hours at Bristol Lulsgate.

Filton does have its advantages many which make the airport unique. It does as Deano pointed out, have a resident Concorde and MK Cargo airlines occasionally have DC8’s & B742’s in. But these can be far and few between. The only regular flights are as pointed out, the eastern airways & small private jets.

Bristol however is a large easyjet base (11 or 12 based aircraft) and throughout the day you find yourself viewing, probably a similar selection to what you would find at Newcastle – Perhaps slightly less, but maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong.

there’s the daily movement to Toulous carrying the workers that comes back around 5pm in a scarebus 320.

Is there? I always thought it was a Privatair A319 but hey, maybe im wrong.

Lukey

I flew into Filton last week, the usual thing there, an MK Airlines DC8 parked round the back out of view, nothing was on the apron, if you are lucky you may catch the daily Eastern flight come in using the JetStream 41, then there’s the daily movement to Toulous carrying the workers that comes back around 5pm in a scarebus 320.
The odd Highland Airways J31 flies into there too.
There is no official viewing area to be honest, the place is like fort knox to get into, you will need a pass. As you know Condorde resides there, it just depends on whether you want to go and look at her (for a fee).
The usual movements of PA28s from Aeros there as well.
