Ryanair buying 70 more Boeing 737-800's

Hi

I,ve just noticed this on another forum. Looks like Ryanair.com are to buy 70 more Boeing 737-800’s worth a stunning $4 billion with options for a further 70aircraft as well.

Here’s the press release. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Business/2005/02/24/ryanair_to_pay_boeing_at_least_4b/

Ryanair to pay Boeing at least $4B
DUBLIN, Ireland Feb. 24 (UPI) — Europe’s most profitable airline will pay more than $4 billion to buy 70 Boeing 737-800s, with an option to acquire 70 more.
Based on a list price of $65 million each, the order by Ireland’s discount carrier Ryanair Holdings PLC tops $4 billion and reflects the carrier’s belief it can continue to cut deals with less well-known, relatively uncongested European airports to keep its rate structure among the industry’s lowest, the Wall Street Journal said Thursday.

This is the second time in two years Ryanair has turned to Boeing instead of Europe’s Airbus for a large number of single-aisle aircraft. And the new order comes on top of commitments for 275 Boeing planes that Ryanair has announced since 1998, of which 155 are firm orders.

Ryanair’s plans may face turbulence, however, from the European Union, which has ruled illegal some of the deals the airline has struck with small, regional airports. Ryanair is appealing the EU ruling

Considering RYR has also sold a few of their older 738s that where due for expensive checks, would this new order be used for replacement or growth?

Hmm, well Mr O’Leary might want to look at FRs policy on pilot recruitment, because I can see that alot of these shiny new 738s will be sat on the ground with no crews to fly them, even the low hr’d wannabes are starting to steer clear now, I know of several 250hr pilots who wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. So long as the recruitment market stays as buoyant as it is I can’t see this changing for some time.

I echo the sentiment that ryanair & any other large order don’t pay list price, ryanair also got a great deal on winglets too, they certainly know how to haggle, but i would say they won’t have much joy with their long-haul order as boeing don’t need to sell the 787, it does it itself,so maybe A350’s for ryanair long-haul?

Given their own distasteful comment on how they “raped” Boeing for the 1st lost, I doubt if we’re looking at more than $1.5 bn to be paid by FR.
