Indian carrier Jet Airways will commence long-awaited flights to New York this summer, with an intermediate stop in Brussels. The flights will be operated from Mumbai and later from New Delhi too. The company expects the services to start by the end of July, early August.
The service means a new direct connection Between India and Belgium. Brussels Airport is currently also in talks with Jet and other Indian carriers to begin cargo operations between India and Belgium. A trade and investment delegation from Belgium met with air cargo operators in Chennai on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 to discuss possibilities of collaboration.
Belgium’s delegation leader, Minister of State and former Prime Minister of Belgium, Jean Luc Dehaene, said during the cargo meeting in India: “Belgium ranks first in the world as a distribution and logistics hub. Bombay is somewhat like Sicily of Italy, a big presence of mafia. It was claimed that 9W was getting financial aid from the mafia in Bombay, hence the investigation by US.

9W was to start this service in 2005, but then a company by the same name in US claimed that 9W had links with the underworld in India. So an investigation has been the cause of this delay.
