Dangerous "object" at Dublin Airport

I flew from Dublin to Bournemouth yesterday by Ryanair. Passing through the terminal I saw one of these bins for dangerous objects you cannot take on as hand luggage and on top of it was a photo album entitled “Wedding Memories” complete with photos rested on top of the bin. I don’t know if it had been dropped and someone left it there or whether someone was making a freudian statement. Quite sad really.

Us staff are allowed to bring liquids through staff security. Are staff at other airports not?

Dont know what would stop me handing over a dealy strawberry youghurt I got through staff secuirity to a passenger :dev2:

I can take liquids through Staff gate here at BHX. Like pax, must be within’ 100ml.

I went with a friend to the local job center, and one of the “star” jobs being advertised was for Security personel at Manchester Airport.

38.5 hours per week on a changing rota patern
4 weeks annual holiday allowance + public holidays
Discounts at many various shops located within Airport.
Pay £5.71 per hour.
Uniform and full training provided

Now i’m not sure if Manchester airport contracts out its security services or does it in house. But for £5.71 per hour, thats not really alot of money considering the pressure that is put upon these hardworking people.

When I worked in security, I was getting £8.50 odd an hour, and that didn’t include travel and shift pay. So it just depends on the employee.

Yes indeed, post ‘9/11’ culture has most certainly brought out the tw*t in many an over zealous airport security operative. Common sense appears to have been added to the banned list. I take the train for most of ‘internal flights’ these days…

I went through security today and saw them searching a women deportee. The went through her bags and took every piece of make up and moisturizer the poor girl had. She was going back to an un certain future and they were stripping her on all dignity. I wonder how they sleep at night?

I would say now, after the restrictions have been in place for some time, a lot of the times it comes down to the personality of the gaurd.
BUT, what you need to understand is that as rubbish as the restrictions sound this is what is feeding the gaurds’ children and putting a roof over their heads. That is to say, this is their job and what they are being trained and paid to do. I know everyone hates the liquid restrictions, but DfT frequent the search area at least a few times a month, at all airports, testing the gaurds on the job. You really don’t know who they are sending through, they are the ‘mystery shoppers’ of airports. And if the gaurd ignores the restrictions and lets a test piece through it is on their record and doesnt bare well for them.

Anyway, my point is, for someone who has worked there I understand both how ridiculous the restrictions are, how important they are for the passengers safety (if you follow the Gospel of the DfT which, if you’re employed under their rules, you have to) and how they must be adhered to to ensure employment.

Don’t forget they get the pleasure of working some EVIL shift patterns aswell. Some of their start time would give an insomniac a fright!

You mean that meager pittance includes shift allowance aswell

Staff at NCL cant take any liquid through security, that applies to ground staff and aircrew.

Does the £5.71 include shift pay? The whole industry isnt great pay anyway apart from some jobs.

The deportee getting all her stuff taking off her. Well security were only doing there job at the end of the day, Would have been nice though to let her check it in.

I no that at NCL you get some really nice, friendly security officers but sometimes you come across some right jobsworths!

£5.71 may not seem good to you guys but compared to the normal security wage thats good. Most security companies wages track the minimum wage and they have no problem getting people to fill it for this amount.

You pay for quality thats why I pay my guys £6 and I am very selective of who I take as I like to pay my people to think.

On the flip side, £5.71 is a dream wage to anyone from Eastern Europe too but then you get the problem of english skills.

I understand where you are coming from, but the security personel at airports are the front line of the defence to stop and search people and there belongings so we dont have another 9/11 or “shoe bomber” incident… These people are under a great deal of stress from the airports and airlines. Passengers who are going on there annual holiday in the sun are also under stress, and 9 times out of 10 its the poor people on security that recieve the brunt of peoples frustrations.
I believe the payscale doesn’t reflect the nature of the job.

As a pointer, you can go into Mcdonalds and earn £6 an hour for half the stress and a roster pattern that will suit your circumstances (single mothers, student etc)

I don’t agree that you can have one rule for passengers and another for staff. Mind you, I don’t agree with the liquid restrictions full stop. What a huge inconvenience.

I too have seen some strange things in the “honesty” boxes. At the moment they are mainly filled with squeezed tooth paste tubes and half filled bottles of shower gel!!!.
Last month I am pleased to report that the ever vigilant security staff foiled a dastardly plan to bring down an aircrat with a yogart!!!! The previous three days I had managed to get my packed lunch through un molested but apparently strawberry yogart is deadly at 30,000ft!!
The “honesty” boxes at the staff entrances at Manchester are just legalized theft in my opinion:mad: AND they have the cheek to publicize the fact that they auction off the “loot” to the security staff!!!

I meant to add (presumably p****** off Bournemouth fans) that the terminal at Bournemouth is like four nissen huts shoved together. Not good for an airport now handling almost 1M pax a year although I gather plans are in the pipeline for a new terminal. The disapointing terminal was offset by the magnificent sight of the Qatar B747SP VP-BAT parked on the other side – sadly too far away for a decent picture with my camera.
