Hi
I don’t know if this is the right place to ask and I apologise if not. I was wondering, with lots of airport viewing galleries closing, if people still collected airline regristration numbers? When going to watch aircraft do you go to take pictures, collect regristation numbers or purely to watch them take off and land, or all 3?
Thanks for your help

Just like Andy, i record the Reg of an aircraft i’ve flown on, I did collect regs for like 2 weeks, then just got bored. Watching, and flying the things i like doing 😀

I do however try to make a mental note of the reg of aircraft as I fly on them…
Even I do that bit… I don’t collect numbers as in spotting, but I have recorded the registration of EVERY aircraft I’ve flown in – all 664 of them.

Like Paul, I have never collected registrations, and I don’t think I’m going to start – ’tis not my thing. I’m too busy pressing shutter buttons for a start.
What I do find though is that I have begun to recognise registrations having seen some aircraft over and over again, especially at LHR. Taking loads of pictures and looking at the reg numbers in the image, mostly for when I need to type them in for a jp.net upload, you do start to build up a little knowledge, and you know whether or not youve seen the aircraft before, but that is as far as I take it.

Nah, I was never into logging reg’s, always thought that was a the ‘anorak’ side of the hobby…:D
I do however try to make a mental note of the reg of aircraft as I fly on them, guess my anorak fits me better these days ? 😮 😮

I do both,i started out as a little puddgy kid taking regs but when i could afford a camera i got hooked on photos & i still continue both,my reg book is probably my prized possesion, altough i find photography a little bit more on the frustrating side when it comes to silly screeners on photo sites,i think i might stick to just the one or two in future:rolleyes:

Still collect registrations now and have been doing for 33 years this year.It used to be all civil until i was about 20 and then it switched to just airliners and business jets only when i actually got interested in the business behind the planes themselves.
Photography of them has never really bothered me although the various aviation photo sites around on the internet and the digital photo age is getting me interested in that side as well.
It is getting more and more difficult to do the hobby for obvious reasons and i resent that the hobby is used as a pariah or a scapegoat by the authorities when you need to save a little cash…eh BAA !!!!
I generally do the ‘row once every six weeks and gatwick once every twelve weeks but Stansted and Luton are a little too far for regularity.
My “escape” is a foreign trip twice a year either with the excellent “Aeroprints” tours to Amsterdam , Paris or Frankfurt ; or the holidays with my better half which indulges me for a couple of hours at the relevant airport on the way home or if i’m truly devious , book a hotel close to the flightpath so i can do holiday AND spot which is ideal.
In fact i enjoy my hobby more now , because of the internet and all the interesting info around than i did when i was younger.
Hopefully, later this year i hope to be holidaying and going through Singapore Changi for a bit of registration exotica:cool:

I had been taking reg’s for 27 years, stopped due to being too busy to keep up to date, because of work..which ironically allowed me to go to more airports! At which point i started taking shots. There are thousands and thousands of reg spotters out there still, evident by the amount of movement and logs sites there are about..( last reg i put in my master log was F-WWOW btw.at last count my master log was sitting at approx 215,000 reg’s, commercial, biz and spam..gave up on mil 15 years ago)

And I still take pictures!
Yeah, yeah, yeah! All rhetoric. Your camera hasn’t been out in months – in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if its jammed up as a result of lack of use! 😮 Do you even know where it is? Come on, admit it, the only thing you take now is registrations! :diablo:

Yes I still collect them but just making a note of them to check them on airliners.net!

I purely take photos. Collecting registrations has never interested me in the slightest for some reason. I know a good few people who do though, but for the most part they tend to be photographers as well.

I’ve been collecting aircraft registrations and taking photos for nigh on fifty years….it’s a hobby i never seem to get tired of

I only used to photograph aircraft until March 2006 at which point I finally succumbed and started taking regs, both civil and military, this has now led to logging frames as well where necessary.
And I still take pictures!

I still do, but its becoming more and more difficult. I live in London and it used to be easy, Luton is OK from near the terminal, Heathrow is OK if you know where to go, Gatwick has become more difficult and the last time I was at Stansted I was asked to move by a policeman with a machine gun because El Al security were worried! Although he suggested I went somewhere where the El Al man couldn’t see me ie the other end of the terminal building! I am looking forward to trips to Brussels, Amsterdam and Dusseldorf soon. And of course Paris in June for the Airshow. I’m not a photographer, but that may be interesting. If only they all had the same attitude as Manchester!

Yep, still collect them as well as make photos of them.
