carbon-offsetting?

I read with interest an article in which the CEO of the new all business-class airline Silverjet, has been attacking the Government’s ‘carbon-offsetting’ scheme by saying that the new crieteria that DEFRA has announced “is not the best way to generate an effective take up of offset schemes.”

It also states that he has ‘warned that consumers may wrongly think they have already paid towards offsetting emissions through the doubling of Air Passenger Duty from next month.’

Well excuse me if I have got it wrong, but I thought that the money generated from the doubling in Air Passenger Duty was going towards the development and implementation of a carbon ‘offsetting scheme’ for airlines/airports? If this is not the case, what is the additonal revenue going to be spent on?

And finally, in the article, Lawerence Hunt (Silverjet’s CEO) states that “If the industry was to simply charge its customers 90p for each hour they fly on average, then they could neutralise the carbon pollution created by the aviation industry.”

Is this true?

And as a consumer, would you be prepared to pay an extra 90p on top of your air-fare in order to do your bit to help the global environment?

What is your opinion/s on carbon-offsetting schemes, do you think they can really work in such an industry as aviation?

Lets debate it…

Worringly the “carbon-offset” principle has become commercialised and so is not as simple as planting a tree. ITN (if you believe them) reckon an offset fee e.g. £5, could go toward a solar panel scheme in Africa. Hmmm….

CO2 is all the rage at the moment. Have we forgotten about the rainforests? That could quite easily upset the world’s weather by itself.

Id rather just plant a tree myself for my journey instead of paying more tax. Maybe we could all club together to get bulk discount 😀
