Avro RJX and Sabena

I am doing a personal study on the abandonment of the Avro RJX project.

I once read or heard that the bankruptcy of Sabena was instrumental in the Avro RJX being cancelled.

Does anyone have any views or has anyone else read this? I cannot remember where I read it:(

I thought that at the time SABENA (or rather DAT) was looking at the F70/F100 and not at the RJX. Obviously when Fokker went belly-up those plans where put into disarray, but at that time I believe the RJX had already been cancelled, or am I mixing up the timeline?

Thanks for the info. As I said, I don’t remember where I read about the Sabena link, it was probably just a rumour on another forum.

Shame that it was cancelled though.

What were the main differences between the RJX and the older Bae 146 series ? Souped up engines/avionics ???

Pretty much just that. Nothing to radical.

As David said if they carried on with the original planned RJX with 2 engines it would probably have sold alot better than the 4 engine version, as most airlines were put off by the fact the RJX had 4 engines.

What should have been the main difference is 2 engines only and not 4!!!

I was working on the RJX programme when they cancelled it. I dont remember any mention of Sabena having anything to do with the cancellation.

In my opinion BAE cancelled it due to the company focusing on military projects and wanting to get out of the loss making (for BAE) regional aircraft market. And they just used 9/11 as an excuse to do this.

Both Druk Air and British European (now FlyBE) both initially wanted to have there aircraft delivered, but eventually there orders were cancelled.

If you want any more info on the RJX just let me know and I will see what I can do.
