Jet2 saves NCL-LGW

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/6171010.stm

A low-cost airline has stepped in to take over flights from Newcastle to London Gatwick after British Airways (BA) said it was scrapping the service.
BA said it had taken the decision for “commercial reasons”. The company will continue to fly to London Heathrow from Tyneside.

Budget airline Jet2.com, which already operates 13 routes from Newcastle, is to take over the Gatwick service.

The replacement service will begin on 25 March next year.

‘Rescue of passengers’

BA is launching three new routes from Gatwick at the same time as axing its Newcastle, Athens, Kiev and Riga services.

Jet2.com plans three flights a day to Gatwick from Newcastle.

A company spokesman said: “This is not the first time we have come to the rescue of BA passengers, but we are more than happy to oblige.

“Gatwick is the ideal London airport for business and for leisure travellers and is the perfect replacement to a long train or car journey to southern England.”

But arnt EZY restricted on how much expansion they can do from LGW now?
… but I doubt EZY can gain sufficent morning slots to make a service to NCL attractive espeically to the business traveller.

Easyjet themselves say that 2 more aircraft are coming next year, so they must have found some slots from somewhere

ORK,SNN and NOC were dropped and they morning slots were used for other routes straight away. I know the decision to drop the Irish routes was more to do with FR than LGW slots but I doubt EZY can gain sufficent morning slots to make a service to NCL attractive espeically to the business traveller.

Two things really,

1. I wouldn’t have said LS have saved the route, common sense tells us someone would step in at some point.

2. I wouldn’t be suprised if EZY commence a flight offering too, with direct competion to LS. Gatwick is easyJets biggest operating base now (i think!) the potential for them (publically and finanically) to take on an ex-BA route will be huge.

So MAN will not be being flying both routes then??? Thats a real shame if not. I really want to see jet2 do well down at LGW and show Easyjet some competition.:)

Good good.

Regarding slots, looks like MAN will be dropped given that the NCL flights arrive/depart at the times the MAN flights did (during the Summer).

Where are the slots at LGW coming from? Dropping the MAN route in favour? I thought there were virtually no slots left at LGW at the sort of times Jet2 are going to be wanting for this route?
