BA moving out of LGW?

Hi all,

I have heard a few rumours floating around at work that British Airways are moving all their operations from Gatwick to Heathrow once T5 is up and running…is this true, what impact is this going to have on British Airways itself but also LGW and LHR?

And I have also heard that GB Airways is discontinuing its franchise partnership with BA, and that Virgin are looking to take them on by bringing Virgin Sun back…any truth in this as well?

Or have I just been spun a load of lies???

Great news there. Is LGW still EZY main hub for flying?

James

Yes- 20 aircraft for next year, 33 destinations (at the moment). Luton has 17 and Stansted 13.

Aye i heard that a gatwick based A/C would do the route as NCL is still all 737 and doesn’t have the trained crews yet.

Heard from where?

Well, easyJet will be basing another 2 A319s at LGW for next year, so that’s a possibility. Jet2 would be most welcome as well:).

Of what i have heard BA will be gradually pulling there short haul flights only out of LGW and keepin some of their long hauls so they can fly to those destinations outlined by “Agent K”. hope this helps you.:)

1L I concur and add that BA is also bound by the Bermuda 2 agreement that a number of the US routes can only be operated from LGW, until open skies happens, then these routes will continue to have to be operated from LGW. Routes such as DFW, ATL, IAH etc. cannot be operated from LHR.

There was a rumour on Pprune, that GB airways on some flights are only operating 30-40% load capacity, which is quite low, and that a takeover from BA mainline was on the cards in the future

Well…. Just when you thought pulling out “the regions” made a mockery of the ‘British’ Airways brand, it’s looking like the ‘London Airways’ moniker may not be the case after all…? 😮

The rumours about BA and LGW have been around on and off during all the years I’ve been with BA. Whether they are true this time who knows. What we do know is that some of the best performing routes at LGW are the ones that can’t be moved to LHR in the near future, and that will always influence decisions.

As for GB Airways, they have recently moved their engineering to Virgin, so further co-operation could be on the cards. I don’t think there is much love lost between GT and BA these days so I wouldn’t be too surprised if this turns out to be true. One thing they do need to consider is that their two most profitable routes, AGP and FAO, actually belong to BA so aren’t theirs to take, unless BA let them. The last rumours I heard about GT are that they have over stretched themselves and aren’t doing at all well financially.

Time will tell on both subjects.

1L.
