Austrian drops A330s and long haul routes

Austrian has confirmed that it is moving to an all-Boeing long haul fleet and as such its 4x A330s and 2x A340s are to leave the fleet next year.

Along with this they’re dropping some long haul routes, including Shanghai, Phuket, Mauritius, Colombo (goes onto Male) and Kathmandu. They’re also dropping plans for new Karachi and Chennai routes.

British Airways and Virgin will soon be the only European carriers flying to Australia following Austrian Airlines’ decision to drop Sydney and Melbourne from its network.
Rising fuel costs and uneconomical fares are behind Austrian’s decision to axe its nine times a week service to Sydney and Melbourne. Flights were operated by a mixture of B777s and B767s and it will also mean that Kuala Lumpur and Singapore (cities where the flights made an en route stop) will also be dropped.

Yes, I think they will regret dropping Shanghai in the long run (unless they have some plan they’re not speaking about). It’s practically the business captial of the world now (if unofficially). I suppose they’re covered through Lufthansa though.

Does this mean that their plans to make Vienna an entry/departure point to access the east are playing out as planned? (dropping routes, I mean)

I don’t think this is a major change in direction because the routes being dropped are fairly insignificant (with the exception of Shanghai which suprised me). They’re likely just to focus on higher yielding destinations.

What will thier long haul fleet consist of ? 777-200s?

777-200s and 767-300s are their focus.
