AMS: Kaagbaan spot to close next year.

Spoke today with one of the roach coach operators at the Kaagbaan spot. They confirmed what everyone already knew. The Kaagbaan spot is to close. However, according to them the timetable has been moved forward… a lot.

The roach coaches have been told that from january 1st they are no longer welcome at the Kaagbaan. Instead, they will be moved to a new official spot to be created alongside the Polderbaan. The exact location is to be determined, but most likely the western side (which is not ideal for photography most of the day).

Where the Kaagbaan spot is now, a new cargo apron will be constructed. For those with some knowledge of the airport, the (Martinair/DHL/FR8) cargo apron and cargo terminals are to be extended.

Long term plan is to get as many as 30 parking spots for 747 sized planes, thus going back all the way to the N201. The current R-apron at the other side of the Kaagbaan has been earmarked for extension of the passenger terminal, but that too is long term. Almost all the ground and fascilities at that side of the runway is already owned by Schiphol. Including KLM Cargo, Martinair offices andpart of Aero-Ground Services. So theoreticaly when the lease expires Schiphol could kick them out without difficulty.

Please note though: as mentioned according to the roach coaches the party is over january 1st. However, most other sources I hear mention late may. So perhaps the spot will remain open for half a year more, but without catering. There is no doubt however that the spot will be history in under a year.

Soon these shots may not be possible anymore.

at the least another spot is being put in place, unlike many airports who hate spotters LHR,CDG…..etc.

Well, technically it is not a new spot. The entire west side of the runway is already accesible for spotters. From line-up all the way to the end. Only difference is that a bunch of concrete will be poured so that cars won’t get dirty and the roach coach won’t get stuck. Probably some low fences too like what is now present at the Kaagbaan spot.
