I’m flying out of LHR in October, to Brisbane, via KL. Only going economy class. Does anyone know whether it’s 747’s that plough this route, or A340’s?
Also, if anyone knows if it is possible to request or reserve specific seats, (in the way that BA and Air New Zealand do) then if you can let me know that too, it would be very handy.
I see that there are positive comments about this Airline elsewhere on this site. Any further comments gratefully received.

Just for info, the flights were 747-400 from/to LHR and 777-200, all of which were very good, even for cattle class, which is how we went.
I would fly with this lot again, nothwithstanding the post from P.L. reporting on an engine issue with a 777 out of Sweden.
Incidentally, used Virgin Blue (737-700) twice, on different routes and Hamilton Island Aviation (Cessna Caravan Floatplane) all of which were very satisfactory.
Thanks for the earlier info.

Really useful info. Many thanks to all. The 747 out of LHR seems to be the one. There is supposed to be a stop-off in KL and then onto a different flight number from KL to Brisbane. Is it likely to be an Airbus for that part of the trip??
Does anyone have any knowledge on reserving seats, or is it first come first served?

Malaysian Airlines are fantastic. Flew on their 744s earlier this year and will again next month to KL and Perth. I believe I’ll get a taste of one of their T7s this time too.
They really are a 5 star airline…in all classes.

They are absolutely Ok.In fact better than ok.
I have flown with them many times business and economy long haul and domestic.
They went through a cost cutting exercise 7 years ago so I imagine this is what happened.
They never made it onto the list of Asian Airlines not to fly with for World Bank employees.Always ok and very nice people.

They do operate the A340-600 into Australia from KL
Well, IF they do then they must be on short term wet leases, and I’m not sure who from. The only Airbus aircraft listed in their fleet are 5xA330-200, 11xA330-300 and the order for 6xA380s. I know they use their A330s to some parts of Oz. I did a search on airliners.net and jetphotos.net, but no photos of these aircraft, and I did a search of the ATI news database and there is no news about them wet leasing such aircraft.
I’m afraid I will ONLY believe this when I see an offending photo. Are you sure you’re not getting them mixed up with Thai?? Or perhaps the A340 mixed up with the A330? (God I’m sorry that probably sounds REALLY patronising Steve, it isn’t meant to be, just trying to resolve).
I’m quite happy to be corrected if wrong, but I’d want a photo I think because I’ve never heard or seen ANYTHING about Malaysia AL operating any A340s.

They’d have to operate some A340s generally before they could put them into LHR 😉

Do you think so
to be fair, that article was published more than 7 years ago.
A friend of mine recently travelled on the London – Kuala Lumpur route, as well as Malaysian domestic flights and was happy to say that the experience was great.

Malayisa Airlines operates 747s from Heathrow and being a 5-star airline, I think you’ll be in for a treat, even in economy class.
