New route to Krakow
easyJet, Europe’s leading low-fares airline, today announced it will be launching flights from Belfast International Airport to Krakow on 24 April 2007. This new Polish route will operate three flights weekly with fares from just £18.99 one way (£37.98 return including tax). The addition of this route is part of a wider expansion plan for Belfast International Airport, which will be announced in the coming weeks.
easyJet is the largest airline in Northern Ireland carrying over 3.6 million passengers every year from the provence and it will be the first airline to offer a direct flight from Northern Ireland to Poland.
Poland joined the EU in May 2004 and has since become an attractive leisure destination, a focus of investment and business development. This new service to Krakow in the south of the country, close to the boarder of the Czech Republic, has been hotly anticipated in Northern Ireland and will allow businesses between the two regions to thrive. Krakow is also a fantastic city break destination for couples, friends and families; One of Poland’s hidden treasures, the city boasts colourful medieval architecture, numerous world-class monuments, charming vistas and some of the world’s most inviting restaurants. Relaxing strolls and shopping is on the menu in Krakow, with its Grand Central square and beautiful never ending plaza, ideal for people watching from the cafes or partying in the buzzing cellar bars.
Paul Cable, easyJet’s Northern Ireland marketing manager, said:
“easyJet is delighted to be announcing another new and exciting route from Belfast International to Krakow. Northern Ireland is a very important market to easyJet and we are looking forward to announcing more new routes and increased frequencies for Summer 2007 in the coming weeks.
There is a great demand for direct low-cost travel in Northern Ireland and easyJet recognises the great potential for further development from the region”

When you have an airport that leaks like Thames Water, you should really expect counter actions by the bigger [ed] airline.

One can only wonder if Wizz knew about Easyjets’ plans when they exchanged contracts with BFS.
Three separate routes to Poland from BFS with two airlines suggests overcapacity to me – will be interesting to see if all three will be sustainable in the long term – of course, Wizz could always operate to/from BHD instead – it has worked for AB to STN!
In any event, with all this expansion at BFS, space is rapidly running out – BFS will really need to do something soon in this respect.

I was only thinking last week that with the massive Polish commmunity in Ireland that BFS is underserved. DUB, SNN and ORK all have adequate flights to Poland and now BFS has 3 routes announced in a week operated by 2 different airlines. Good going!
