landings you remember

What are the top 5 landings you most remember.

Mine are

1. Iberworld A320 TFS-LBA crosswind landing on which the plane bounced up again for 4 seconds, then full brakes and reversers were slammed on)

2. Monarch 757 MAN-KGS (The plane landed very hard and even had to be inspected for damage at KGS)

3. Spanair MD83 MME-TFS (Never known reverse thrust to be so loud)

4. Caledonian L1011 MAN-TFS (I remember this burning rubber in TFS and rattling on landing)

5. British Airways 767-300 MAN-JFK (No reverse thrust used it was very smooth as well)

Top 5 landings…

1.On flight deck of Cathay 747-400 into Kai Tak at night and on checker board approach. Christmas 1996

2. EasyJet 733 landing into Luton,Full emergency services in attendance as we had lost part of the wing during take-off from Inverness. Captain kept us informed all the way on what was happening.

3. First Choice 757 Salzburg 2005. Last flight into salzburg that day due to heavy snow..full reverse thrust and braking.

4. Not Strictly commercial.. Piper Pa28. dad flying in deterioting weather, the lycoming fan up front started to run rough..declared an emergency and RAF/USAF alconbury runway illumintated in distance..landed, taxied to back parking space only to be greeted by 15 heavily armed soldiers. Base commander asked a few questions, then Escorted off base by the rock apes (RAF Police) and dumped at front gate.

5. Kendall Airways Saab340 used to use jump seat on flight deck as extra revenue seat.. landing into devonport,Tasmania. Great crew, really chatty and typical ozzy sense of humour.

Which planes would you say have loudest reverse thrusts.

The ones that spend the most time making the transition from air to land.

Many years back I came from Gatwick to Liverpool via Coventry on a evening Genair Shorts SD360 (or was it a 330? Can’t remember now).
There were probably more crew than passengers, and we arrived in Liverpool rather ahead of schedule. As the engines wound down, the curtain at the front was pulled back and a cheerful face appeared. ‘See what you get with Genair? Back in time for last orders!’

Back in the days when BMI were British Midland, flying B733’s LHR to Leeds, I was on the 420 on a particularly stormy windy night (both on departure from Heathrow and all the way up to Leeds). The Pilot, an Australian with a wicked sense of humour was making a number of light-hearted comments through the flight to calm our nerves (?).

He kindly advised that “the good news is the 45+ knots wind at Leeds has eased to around 30 knots, the bad news is it’s now blowing straight across the runway rather than down it”. “It’s going to be bumpy the whole way up so enjoy the Diamond Service bar – If I were back with you guys I’d be asking for a very large one!” Rather than the usual “Cabin Crew -10 Minutes to landing” we got “10 minutes to splashdown ladies!”

After a very “lumpy” approach in the turbulence with much crabbing into the south westerly we made a firm but excellent landing under the circumstances, when we had slowed up, to great applause from the passengers the pilot comes back on the mic. “OK folks you can take your hands off your eyes – I know it’s safe to do so because my first officer has just done so!”

I’ve only ever experienced one go-around and that was with easyJet in November 2004. When you are gently descending and suddenly the nose goes up and full throttle is applied, it is quite nerve-wracking, but it was a memorable trip.

And one of my Thai 747 trips was quite fun, too. When we landed back at Heathrow we were affected by a mighty crosswind and the aircraft was banking heavily to the right (if that is the correct term?) when we touched down.

2004, BY763 from LGW landing in MBJ, such a spectacular approach with a low level pass over the beach followed by a great big crash as we hit the runway.

Best landing I have experienced would have to be AF A343 into CDG. Banked right at the last minute then smooth landing but VERY hard braking. If it counts then it would be beaten by Air2000 from ALC-MAN in 1996, aborted landing and we did a go-around, then when we did actually land, we rolled out right to the end of the runway!

Ive never had a terrible landing but DUB-HHN with FR was a bit rough.

My best one ws DUB-FRA with LH it was so smooth.

Also LHR-DUB BD A321 very very windy and could see the runway as we turned onto final approach so it was nice to see exactly where we were aiming for.

AA MD11 into San Jose – just after a thunderstorm so quite bumpy. Aircraft ‘slammed’ into wet runway, bounced and with a lot of braking / reverse thrust eventually stopped. (overhead bins had come open etc)

Tu134 to Moscow DME – again descending through thunderstorm so a bit of a rollercoaster, broke out of cloud, gear & flaps down at the same time, lot of power as we crossed airport fence (to slow the rate of plummet!) but a very smooth touchdown.

Landing after first solo will not be forgotten either

Lufthansa A340 at the old Hong Kong airport. Long curved approach, then right on the runway centre line, wings more or less level. The roll seemed to go for ever.
Training captain in the left-hand seat to the raw amateur in the co-pilot’s position (myself): “Very good for a beginner. But now ve are in der harbour!”
That’s the beauty of a simulator. Turn the blighter round, a bit of extra power and just taxi back on to dry land…
OK, so we were really in Frankfurt. But it was fun!
