Absolutely. I am very familiar with the doors as fitted to the 757 and widebody Airbus types and this story is complete tosh! In the event of normal operation becoming unavailable (both normal access and emergency codes) the pilot inside could have de-powered the mechanism and used the door conventionally.

Access to hinges…use the fire axe…etc

It’s probably been embellished by the media

If all they had avail was an axe to break the door, do you think airline would favour FO landing himself or a large repair bill?

I woulda thought the repair bill because obviously safety is more important and a new plane costs a lot more than a new door 😀 Obviously the risk is very low but i wouldn’t have thought it was worth taking.

From what i read the hinges had been dismantled , to me that means they unscrewed them, as the door was fully serviceable after wards now this would be a mean feat with a leather man multi-tool, now if he had used the axe I would believe that a lot of damage would have been done to both the door, the hinges and the bulkhead Something dose not ring true, have the FAA and the CAA not been telling use the whole truth about these supposedly impenetrable cockpit doors

I was reading a discussion that said the FO had removed the door from the inside, which then sparked more discussion about no one being at the controls for a period of time.

If it was designed properly, access to bolts should be on flightdeck side! Also what plane carries screwdrivers in cabin?? May the First Officer took his axe to it?

I think there would be a way of taking off the door, maybe with special equipment. Lucky he manged to get back in or if not the F/O would have been stuck inside the cockpit even if he had resorted to landing on his own

There is something really fishy with this story and I bet it bears absolutely no resemblence to the truth. This is a door that is designed to be bulletproof, etc. Do we really think that you could just take apart at the hinges from the outside? This thing is designed to be impossible to access.

I think it was just a rare occurrence that was pounced on by the media……with a two man crew…. i don’t think safety was ever compromised

I read this earlier, but isn’t it about the flightdeck door and not the toilet door? He was stuck in the cabin and couldn’t get back into the flightdeck.
