Anyone ever had the experiance of flying with Caledonian Airways in the 80s and 90s. I flew on an L1011 of theres MAN-TFS-MAN (G-BBAE i think both ways), it was a very unique plane to go on, 3-4-3 abreast seating, a huge cinema screen, the middle luggage rack removed, toliets at the rear and best of all the hum of the engine sitting at rear of plane.

Not removed, never there. Tristars were built either with or without centre overhead lockers depending on the wishes of the airline. I don’t think any of Caledonians Tristars had them. Can you imagine that now, with the amount of stuff everyone wants to carry? Nightmare.
Also guys don’t forget that although they looked alike (especially livery and uniforms) Caledonian Airways and British Caledonian Airways were VERY different airlines.

Im always trying to wonder if my flight CKT258 on 1/1/99 MAN-TFS was G-BBAE and the return on 8/1/99 CKT259 was also G-BBAE.
Please help me people.

Yes indeed, ‘Caledonian’ was effectively a rebranding operation applied to British Airtours long after British Caledonian had been wiped off the map by BA’s buyout/merger/takeover. Caledonian along with Flying Colours later became JMC which we now see as Thomas Cook.
I often wonder why BA brought the Caledonian brand back ? Was it anything to do with image/PR concerns following the British Airtours MAN/737 accident ?

Had a few flights with Bcal, mostly on 1-11s from GLA-LGW and once on a 707 PIK-JFK,Great airline, loved to boast of their “Scottishness”. Remember the ads and the song too; “I wish they all could be Caledonian girls” :p :p Extreme cheese.
